Como en casa, en ningún sitio / No place like home

Si tengo que elegir un sitio para estar confinado, está claro que no hay ninguno como estar en casa. Aquí tengo mis libros, mis juguetes, mi cama, mi televisión y todo lo que necesito. De todos modos, también es cierto que después de un tiempo viene bien hacer otras cosas, si es que puedes y te dejan, claro.

If I have to choose anywhere to be confined, it’s clear to me that there is no place like home. Here I have my books, my toys, my bed, by television, and everything I need. It is true through, that after some time locked down at home it’s good to get out and do things, that is if you can and allowed to.

Por suerte, Avril se recuperó de la rotura del brazo y pudimos viajar a Mallorca. Apenas viajaba nadie durante aquellos días y al entrar en el avión giramos a la izquierda, cosa que no habíamos hecho antes. Teníamos un sitio para cada uno, con un asiento reclinable y una pantalla grande. Yo le dije a papá que esto no parecía un avión, pero no era cuestión de quejarse.

Fortunately, Avril recovered from the broken arm, and we could travel to Mallorca. Very few people travelled during those days and when we entered the plane we turned left, something we had not done before. We had one spot for each of us, with a reclining seat and a big screen. I told daddy that that didn’t look like a plane, but it was not something to complain about.

Tuvimos que hacer escala en Alemania, pero al final llegamos a Mallorca y nos encontramos con los abuelos. Habíamos alquilado una casa para estar juntos pero separados del resto del mundo. No hay duda de que lo que más me gustó fue la piscina.

We had to stop over in Germany, but finally we arrived at Mallorca and met Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves. We had rented a house to be all together but separated from the rest of the world. Undoubtedly, what I liked the most was the swimming pool.

Aunque también me gustó la playa, o más bien las playas, porque fuimos a varias y me lo pasé bien en todas.

Though I liked the beach too, or better said, the beaches, because we went to a few and I enjoyed everyone of them.

Después de haber pasado tanto tiempo sin salir de casa, parecía mentira poder ir a tantos sitios. Desde la casa en la que estábamos podíamos ir andando a un par de playas diferentes, aunque a veces había que quitar obstáculos del camino.

After having spent so much time indoors, it was unbelievable to be able to go to so many places. From the house we stayed we could walk to a couple of beaches, although sometimes we had to move some obstacles aside.

Un día alquilamos un barco para navegar alrededor de la bahía de Alcudia. Al principio había un poco de oleaje y por un tiempo ya no me pareció tan buena idea. La cosa se puso peor cuando decidimos parar para nadar hasta una playa y la abuela Nieves se quedó a medio camino. Nos asustamos mucho y papá y mamá tuvieron que ayudarla para que volviera a subir al barco. Por suerte las olas se fueron, el susto se pasó, y pudimos disfrutar del resto del paseo.

One day we rented a boat to sail around the Alcudia Bay. In the beginning the sea was wavy and for some time it didn’t look like a good idea. Things turned to worse when we decided to stop and swim to a nearby beach and Grandma Nieves got stuck halfway through. We got a big scare and daddy and mommy had to help her make her way back to the boat. Fortunately, the waves subsided, the scare went away, and we could enjoy the rest of the trip.

También fuimos a comer a restaurantes, que era algo que no habíamos podido hacer por mucho tiempo. Un día fuimos al de las salchichas voladoras, que a mamá le había gustado cuando estuvimos el año anterior.

We also went to restaurants, something we had not been able to do in a long time. One day we went to the flying sausage place, which mommy had liked so much when we went the year before.

Antes de volver a Canadá, pasamos unos días en el pueblo. Avril no quería que fuera con ella y sus amigos y a mí me daba pereza pensar en salir y hacer otros nuevos. Lo bueno es que había llevado unos cuantos libros del Wimpy Kid para entretenerme.

Before returning to Canada, we spent a few days in Navalacruz. Avril didn’t want me to go with her and her friends and didn’t feel like going out and making new ones. Good thing I had brought a few Wimply Kid books to keep entertained.

Y es que el Wimpy Kid es una fuente de sabiduría. Ya tengo 15 ejemplares y esto esperando que salga el número 16 en unos meses. No sé cuántas veces los he leído, pero me he dado cuenta de que cuando papá y mamá hablan de algo que creen que no entiendo, o veo las noticias en la televisión, ya sé de qué van, porque lo he aprendido con el Wimpy Kid.

The Wimpy Kid is a true source of wisdom. I already have 15 different books and I am expecting the 16^th in a few months. I don’t know how many times I have read each, but I have realized that when daddy and mommy talk about something they think I don’t understand, or when I listen to the news on TV, I know what it is about, because I have learned it from the Wimpy Kid.

Sólo estuvimos un par de semanas en España, pero al final ya tenía ganas de volver a casa y empezar el colegio otra vez.

We only spent a couple of weeks in Spain, but I was ready to get back home and start school once again.

El comienzo del curso parecía como en años anteriores. Era mi último año en Michaëlle Jean y ya me sabía la rutina. Pero no fue igual. No sólo teníamos que llevar mascarilla todo el rato, y sentarnos solos, sino que en el recreo sólo podíamos jugar en un espacio limitado con los niños de nuestra clase.

The start of the schoolyear was like similar to previous years. It was my last year at Michaëlle Jean and I knew the routine. But it wasn’t the same. Not only we had to wear a mask all the time, and to sit by ourselves, but at recess we could only play in a limited space with the kids from our classroom.

Y no fue sólo eso. Los casos de COVID empezaron a subir otra vez al final del otoño y empezamos a tener clase online en lugar de en el colegio. Pese a que volvimos a clase en febrero, las cosas no se arreglaron, y acabamos haciendo los últimos meses del curso desde casa. No se me dio mal, pero claramente no era lo mismo.

And it was not only that. The COVID cases started to soar at the end of the fall, and we started to have online learning instead of going to school. We went back in February, but things didn’t improve, and we ended up completing the last few months of the year from home. I could do it alright, but it was clearly not the same.

Sin muchos sitios adónde ir, las actividades se redujeron bastante. Dábamos paseos todo el rato, aunque nevara.

Without many places where to go, the range of activities became constrained. We walked around the neighbourhood all the time, even if it snowed.

Mamá se empeñó en que fuéramos a patinar, aunque a mi no me gustaba mucho la idea.

Mommy insisted on us going to skate, even though I didn’t like the idea much.

También se empeñó en que fuéramos a montar en bicicleta y compró una bici para cada uno para que no hubiera ninguna excusa. No era una mala idea, pero yo salía siempre mal parado porque tengo la bici más pequeña y tengo que dar más pedales, que cuesta arriba se nota.

She also insisted on us going out for bike rides and she bought a bicycle for each one so that we didn’t have any excuse. It wasn’t a bad idea, but I always drew the short end of the stick because my bike is the smallest and I have to pedal more than anyone, and uphill it hurts.

Y para rematar, se esmeró también con la jardinería, poniendo más flores y plantas en el jardín de casa. Todos los días cuando volvíamos de caminar añadía varios minutos al paseo, porque se quedaba admirándolas.

And to conclude her insistences, she went crazy with the garden, planting more flowers and plants. Every day when we came back from our walks, she added a few minutes to it to admire them.

Aunque hicimos algunos puzles y otras actividades manuales, con el colegio online nos informatizamos un poco más. Papá y mamá compraron otro Chromebook para que tuviéramos uno cada uno, y por Navidad me regalaron una tablet. Así que ahora podía jugar a juegos online con Avril y sus amigas, que eso sí me dejaba hacer.

Even though we did a few puzzles and other manual activities, with the online school we computerized ourselves more. Daddy and mommy bought another Chromebook so that we had one each, and for Christmas, they bought me a tablet. So now I could play online games with Avril and her friends, something she allowed me to do.

Y así, como quien no quiere la cosa, llegó mi cumpleaños, que es la antesala del final del curso. Aún no se podía ir a muchos sitios, por las restricciones, pero mamá encontró un minigolf que estaba abierto, y nos lo pasamos genial.

And just like that, my birthday arrived, which means that the schoolyear is almost over. We could not go to many places yet, because of the restrictions, but mommy found a minigolf place open, and we had a great time there.

De regalo me pedí un peluche que era un personaje de los juegos de Roblox. Otro más para la colección, aunque por ahora es mi preferido.

As a gift I asked for a stuffy that was a character in Roblox. One more for my collection, but this one is my favourite now.

Poco después, cuando cambiaron las normas de los viajes, a papá se le ocurrió ir a un sitio junto al mar. Ya estábamos pensando en playa, porque era el mes de julio, pero estas islas estaban un poco demasiado al norte y hacía bastante frío. Menos mal que llevamos una chaqueta.

Soon after, when they changed the travel rules, daddy thought we could go to a place by the sea. We were all thinking on the beach because it was the month of July, but these islands were a bit too much to the north and it was cold. Good think we took our jackets with us.

Estuvo bien salir de casa, conocer sitios nuevos, comer otra vez en restaurantes, y hacer algo diferente, como dice papá para quitarnos el moho …

It was good to get out of the house, get to know new places, eat out again, and do something different, like daddy says to get rid of the mould …

Y aunque teníamos Netflix y Disney+, la verdad es que como en casa, en ningún sitio.

And even though we had Netflix and Disney+, the truth is that there is no place like home.

Confinados / Locked down

Había sido un invierno como otro cualquiera. Ni muy frío ni no tan frío. Después de regresar de Perú volvimos a la rutina normal de colegio, deportes y juegos. Nevó lo suficiente para poder tirarnos con el trineo y a primeros de marzo ya estábamos listos para la primavera.

It had been a winter like any other. Neither too cold nor not so cold. After returning from Peru we got back to the regular routine of school, sports, and games. It snowed enough for us to slide down the hill with the sleigh and in early March were ready for the spring.

Las clases de baloncesto en el programa Junior NBA empezaron en enero. Nos dieron una camiseta y un balón a cada uno y era mucho mejor que el anterior. Practicábamos el bote del balón con las dos manos, entradas a canasta, movimientos laterales, posiciones defensivas, … vamos, que era muy completo.

The basketball lessons in the Junior NBA program started in January. They gave us a shirt and a ball to each of us and it was clearly better than the previous one. We practiced ball handling with both hands, layups, lateral movement, defensive positions, … you can say it was quite complete.

Las clases de tenis también estaban yendo bien. Por una vez habíamos encadenado más de un trimestre para coger el ritmo y se estaba empezando a notar el progreso.

The tennis lessons were also working well. For once we had signed up in back to back quarters to maintain a good rhythm and we could notice the progress.

Se acercaban las vacaciones de primavera y ahora que viajar es más fácil para nosotros, papá les dijo a los abuelos que se vinieran un par de semanas y así podían pasar tiempo con nosotros. Lo que no sabíamos es que el mundo se volvería patas arriba y que no podrían regresar a España: las vacaciones de primavera se convirtieron en la primavera entera.

March break was close and now that travelling is easier for us, daddy told Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves to come for a couple of weeks so that they could spend some time with us. What we did not know is that the world would turn upside down and that they wouldn’t be able to get back to Spain: a March break getaway turned into an entire spring away from home.

En el colegio también estiraron la semana de vacaciones, pero en algún momento se dieron cuenta de que no iban a abrir, porque el virus parecía estar por todas partes y empezamos a tener clases por Internet, que más que clases eran deberes por aquí y deberes por allá.

At school they extended the week off, but at some point they realized that they would not reopen, because the virus was everywhere and we started having online lessons, which more than lessons were homework and more homework.

Mamá nos organizó para que no nos aburriéramos en casa: nos dejaba ver la tele o jugar a la tablet hasta las 10. Luego teníamos tiempo para deberes con el abuelo Pablo, y al terminar nos íbamos a dar un paseo con ellos. Después de comer, podíamos jugar con la tablet hasta las 3. Luego teníamos que leer una hora y al acabar hacíamos los deberes del colegio, que papá revisaba cuando terminaba de trabajar. Después salíamos a pasear con papá y mamá y al volver jugábamos a las cartas con los abuelos.

Mommy organized us so that we didn’t get bored at home: she let us watch TV or play with the tablet until 10. Then we had time to do homework with Grandpa Pablo, and when we were done we went for a walk with them. After lunch, we could play with the tablet until 3. Later we had one hour to read and when we finished we did the school homework, which daddy supervised when he finished working. Later we went for another walk with mommy and daddy and at our return we played cards with the grandparents.

Al principio no estaba mal, pero la situación no cambiaba, y los días se convertían en semanas, y las semanas en meses. Por mucho que repartiéramos el tiempo, no había mucho más Boss Baby que ver o Wimpy Kid que leer. Se nos acabaron los libros de deberes, los libros que leer y los paseos se repetían. No veíamos a nadie más, estaba claro que no íbamos a volver al colegio y ya no sabíamos si tendríamos vacaciones de verano.

In the beginning it was not bad, but the situation didn’t change, and the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months. No matter how much we organized our time, there was no more Boss Baby to watch or more Wimpy Kid to read. We ran out of homework books, reading books, and the walks looked all the same. We couldn’t see anyone else and it was becoming clear that we would not return to school and it was unclear whether we would have a summer vacation.

Una cosa buena que salió de tanto paseo fue que tuve la oportunidad de practicar más con la bicicleta y un día, sin saber muy bien cómo, no me hizo falta que me sujetaran y aprendí a montar yo solo.

Something good that came out of so many walks was that I had the opportunity to practice with the bicycle and one day, without knowing well how, I could ride by myself without any help.

A partir de aquel día queríamos montar en bici en todos los paseos. Como la bicicleta de Avril se le había quedado un poco pequeña, los abuelos le compraron una y así podíamos ir los dos juntos sin tener que hacer turnos. Hicimos un montón de kilómetros con paseos por la mañana y por la tarde, con mejor tiempo cada vez. Y habríamos hecho más si no hubiéramos hecho el tonto un día, que Avril acabó chocando conmigo y se rompió el brazo al caerse.

From that moment on we wanted to ride the bike in every walk. Given that Avril had outgrown her bicycle, the grandparents bought one for her and that way we could go together without taking turns. We made a lot of kilometres on morning and evening walks as the weather got better. And we would have done more if we had not fooled around one day, when Avril crashed into me, fell down and broke her arm.

Pero eso vino más adelante, ya en el verano.  Todavía quedaba mucha primavera. Mamá aprovechó que teníamos ayuda para hacer cambios en el jardín. Plantamos muchas plantas nuevas, resembramos parte del césped y arreglamos los arbustos. A los abuelos les dio vidilla y a partir de esa semana se dedicaron a regar y mimar las plantas todos los días.

But that came later, already in the summer. We still had lots of spring to go. Mommy took advantage of having help at home to make some changes in the yard. We planted many new plants, sowed parts of the lawn and groomed the bushes. Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves liked the plan and from that week on they took care of watering and pampering the plants every day.

Para entonces ya se había establecido que a partir de ahora íbamos a tener que usar mascarillas. La abuela Nieves se empeñó en hacerlas ella y montó un taller en el sótano. Mamá también compró unas cuantas, como ésta de TELUS, que dice ella que tiene gracia, pero a mí no me la hace.

At that time it had been established that from then on we had to wear face masks. Grandma Nieves thought she could make them herself and set up a shop in the basement. Mommy bought a few of her own, like this from TELUS, which she says is funny, though I don’t think so.

A mediados de junio las cosas estaban mejor, tanto aquí como en España, y los abuelos decidieron regresar para poder ponerse al día con los médicos. Antes de que se fueran celebramos mi cumpleaños. Nos adelantamos un poco, pero era la oportunidad de hacer algo de fiesta ya que no íbamos a poder celebrarlo con amigos.

Mid-June things were looking better, both here and in Spain, and the grandparents decided to get back home and catch up with the doctors. Before they left we celebrated my birthday. We did it ahead of schedule, but it was the only chance to have a little party given that we would not be able to celebrate it with friends.

El plan era que nosotros nos reuniríamos con ellos en Mallorca unas semanas más tarde, pero fue entonces cuando Avril hizo el tonto con la bici, se cayó y se rompió el brazo. Lo bueno es que han dicho que sólo serán 4 semanas, pero tendremos que ver si el virus sigue tranquilo y tenemos la oportunidad de viajar.

The plan was for us to reunite with them in Mallorca a few weeks later, but then Avril went silly with the bike, fell, and broke her arm. The good thing is that she’s been told that it will only be an issue for 4 weeks, but we need to wait and see if the virus doesn’t go crazy and gives us the chance to travel.

Piscinas / Swimming Pools

Este año nada más acabar el colegio nos fuimos a España. Era distinto que otras veces porque se vino mamá con nosotros. Además, según llegamos nos cogimos otro avión y nos fuimos a una isla que se llama Mallorca.

This year we went to Spain as soon as we finished school. It was different from other times because mommy came with us. Besides, as we arrived we took another plane and we went to an island named Mallorca.

Sólo estuvimos una semana, pero lo pasamos genial. Todos los días íbamos a la playa, pero no a la misma playa. Como habíamos alquilado un coche podíamos ir a diferentes sitios. La isla era pequeña como para llegar pronto y grande como para que cada sitio fuera distinto.

We only stayed for a week, but we had a great time. Every week we went to the beach, but not to the same beach. Because se had rented a car we could go to different places. The island was small enough for us to arrive fast and big enough for each place to be distinct.

Por las tardes cuando volvíamos a casa mamá nos dejaba una hora de piscina y a esa hora ya no había nadie, así que Avril y yo la disfrutábamos de lado a lado.

Every afternoon when we got back home mommy let us spend one hour in the pool and at that time the wasn’t anyone, so Avril and I could enjoy it from side to side.

Entre la playa y la piscina hacíamos excursiones, como un día que fuimos a una cueva que tenía una laguna dentro y algo que parecían chupiteles colgando del techo y como setas gigantes saliendo del suelo. Y si eso no es poco, además tocaban música clásica y nos dejaron montar en barca dentro de la cueva.

Between the beach and the swimming pool we did excursions, like the day we went to a cave with a lagoon inside and something that looked like icicles hanging from the ceiling and giant mushrooms growing on the ground. And if that’s not something, on top of that they played classical music and they let us take a ride on a boat inside the cave.

También comimos cosas ricas, aunque a veces no se parecían a lo que estamos acostumbrados. Papá un día trajo una especie de bollo gigante enroscado, pero la cosa de dentro, aunque sabía bien tenía un tacto sospechoso. Y un día fuimos a comer a un restaurante que estaba lleno de salchichas voladoras, lo que me pareció raro, pero luego cuando comimos una de ellas asada, estaba bien buena.

We also ate yummy things, though they not always looked like food we are used to. Daddy brought a big coiled bun with something sweet inside that had a good taste but a weird touch. One day we went to eat to a restaurant full of flying sausages, which looked weird, but the one we ate grilled was very good.             

Lo dicho, que lo pasamos tan bien que nos habría gustado quedarnos más tiempo, pero teníamos que volver porque papá y mamá tenían que regresar a Canadá. Lo bueno es que nos volvimos con la sonrisa puesta.

We had a great time and we would have liked to stay longer, but we had to get back because we daddy and mommy had to return to Canada. We got back with a smile in our faces though.

Después de la playa vino el pueblo. Los primos llegaron pronto y pude retomar las partidas de parchís con Tomás. A veces nos juntábamos todos y nos echábamos una partida de Uno.

After the beach it was time for the town in the mountains. The cousins arrived soon after and I could retake the parchesi showdowns with Tomas. Sometimes we got all of us together and played Uno.

Un día también se le ocurrió la idea a Clara de que hiciéramos un concurso de cocina. No fue muy justo porque eran los mayores contra los pequeños, uniformados y todo, pero mientras unos discutían el asunto yo me fui comiendo los postres que habíamos preparado.

One day Clara had the idea of having a cooking contest. It was not fair, because it was the older kids versus little ones, with uniforms and all, but while some where arguing about it I ended up eating all dessert creations we had come up with.

Sólo estuvieron diez días, pero nos dio tiempo a hacer muchas cosas y a hacer un par de visitas a la piscina. No importa que sean verdes o azules, a mí me gustan todas.

They only stayed for ten days, but we had time to do many things and take a couple of trips to swimming pools. No matter if they are green or blue, I like them all.

Cuando se fueron, empezamos una rutina más normal, con días en el campamento, juegos en la plaza, verbenas los fines de semana, y alguna que otra excursión a Ávila o a Navatalgordo, que ahí también hay piscina.

When they left, we started a more normal routine, with camp days, games at the town square, weekend concerts, and trips to Avila and Navatalgordo, where we could go to another swimming pool.

Y luego llegó un día en que todo se interrumpió. Empezó con humo a lo lejos y un aviso de que había un incendio forestal en la montaña del pueblo. Pensábamos que se iba a quedar en eso, porque siempre hablan de incendios en la tele, pero cuando llegó la noche las llamas ya estaban cerca de las casas y las cenizas caían del cielo. Nos quedamos en casa todo el rato y me dio mucho miedo porque pensaba que podía quemarse todo.

And then there was a day when everything stopped. It started with smoke in the horizon and a warning that there was a forest fire close to the town. We thought it would stay like that, because they always talk about forest fires on the TV, but when the night arrived the flames were close to the houses and the ashes fell from the sky. We stayed at home all the time and I was very scared because I thought everything could burn out.

Por suerte, los bomberos fueron capaces de contener el fuego y al día siguiente consiguieron apagarlo. La montaña se quedó ennegrecida pero como es el lado de las piedras y la arena, puede que para el año que viene ya no se note mucho.

Fortunately, the firefighters were able to contain the fire and the next day they extinguish it. The mountain was black but because it is the side with boulders and dirt, it is possible that we won’t notice by next year.

Papá y mamá llegaron a finales del verano y pasamos todos juntos unos días con los abuelos. Un día fuimos a hacer una excursión a un sitio donde no se puede ir en coche. Ya habíamos estado antes, pero esta vez había que caminar más. Tanto que se me ocurrió que papá podía ayudarme a subir la cuesta.

Daddy and mommy arrived at the end of the summer and we spent a few days with grandpa and grandma. One day we went on a trek to place you cannot arrive by car. We had been there before but this time we had to walk more. So much that I thought that daddy could help me up the hill.

Llegamos hasta una laguna rodeada de rocas y por el camino nos encontramos cabras, lagartos, alguna vaca despistada y otros bichos. Se me hizo largo, así que tuvimos que hacer una parada técnica, porque yo necesito más de una visita al día, y más comiendo melocotones. Desafortunadamente, esta vez no fue un mediano y dos pequeños.  

We walked all the way to a lake surrounded by rocks and along the way we found goats, lizards, some confused cows and other bugs. It was long and we needed to make a technical stop, because I need more than a visit per day, especially when I eat peaches. Unfortunately, this time it was not a medium and two smalls.

Cuando volvimos a Toronto aún tuve tiempo de jugar un partido de baseball y salir en la foto de equipo, justo antes de empezar el colegio.

When we returned to Toronto, I still had time to play a baseball match and make it to the team picture, just before the school started.

Este año estoy en segundo curso y me parece fácil como el año pasado. Hacemos más cosas, pero las matemáticas son fáciles y el francés también. Papá dice que lo que tengo que hacer es escribir mejor porque mis letras y mis números andan un poco dislocados. Los viernes me gusta volver pronto en el autobús cuando mamá está en casa, porque nos deja jugar a la Wii hasta la hora de ir a la clase de español.

This year I am in second grade and it looks easy, like last year. We do more things, but math is easy, and French is easy too. Daddy says that what I must do is improve my printing, because my letters and my numbers are a bit dislocated. On Fridays I like to get back home early on the bus when mommy is at home, because she let us play with the Wii until it is time to go to Spanish classes.

Octubre fue bonito como siempre, con los árboles cambiando de color y los días frescos, pero no fríos. Un día nos fuimos a dar una vuelta a Kleinburg y jugamos al frisbee, al fútbol, y con el frisbee trampolín. Teníamos el campo para jugar nosotros solos.

October was beautiful as always, with the trees changing colours and days that were cool but not cold. One day we went for a walk to Kleinburg and played frisbee, soccer, and the bouncing frisbee. We had the entire field for ourselves.

Por Halloween mamá se quiso esmerar más con las decoraciones. A veces pienso que ella se lo pasa mejor que nosotros. Bueno, que Avril no sé, porque a ella le gusta esto de los disfraces, pero a mí no tanto. Si no fuera por la cosecha de golosinas, yo creo que me quedaría en casa.

For Halloween mommy wanted to amp up the decoration. Sometimes I think that she enjoys Halloween more than we do. Well, not more than Avril, because she likes playing with costumes, but I don’t like it so much. If it wasn’t for the candy harvest, I think I would stay at home. 

En todo caso, al final le pedí a mamá un disfraz de los que no se ve quién eres y a pesar de la lluvia salimos a buscar golosinas. Avril, mucho Harry Potter y mucha bufanda, y al final se cogió un catarro.

In any case, in the end I asked mommy for a costume that did not allow you to know who is in it and despite the rain we went out trick-or-treating. Avril, Harry Potter scarf and all ended up catching a cold.

Mamá cumplió su promesa y al llegar el otoño me apuntó para jugar baloncesto. Primero no echamos una pachanguita con Claudia y Luca, que como se puede ver fue un poco desastre.

Mommy kept her promise and she signed me up in the fall to basketball classes. First we had a scrimmage with Claudia and Luca, but as you can see was quite disastrous.

Luego empezaron las clases en el centro comunitario, que no fueron mucho mejor. Allí había monitor y casi 20 niños, pero no hacíamos más que correr de un lado a otro y rara vez metíamos canasta. Había otro niño que jugaba más o menos bien y nunca nos ponían juntos. Cuando acabábamos de jugar sólo él y yo conseguíamos anotar.

Then the lessons started in the community centre, but it was not much better. There we had a coach and almost 20 kids, but we just ran from one side to the other and rarely scored a basket. There was another boy who could play a little and we were never placed in the same team. When we finished playing only him and I used to score.

Así que mamá pensó que había madera de jugador y me llevó a probar otro programa que se llama Junior NBA. Parece mucho más serio y hay más nivel así que voy a apuntarme en enero. No sólo yo. A Avril también le gustó, así que vamos a ir los dos.

But mommy thought there was some talent there, so she took me to try another program called Junior NBA. This one looks more serious and there is clearly more level and I have decided to start in January. Not just me. Avril liked it too and we are going to go together.

Avril celebró el cumpleaños en casa con sus amigas. Seguía con Harry Potter por aquí, Harry Potter por allá, así que mamá le preparó una fiesta Harry Potter. Menos mal que siempre que viene Claudia se trae a Luca, y así pudimos jugar los dos juntos al Mario Kart en la Wii.

Avril celebrated her birthday at home with her friends. She kept harping with Harry Potter, so mommy prepared her a party Harry Potter themed. Fortunately, Claudia always comes with Luca, which meant that I could play Mario Kart on Wii with him.

Aparte de jugar a la Wii he empezado a coleccionar cromos de los Pokémon. A mamá al principio le parecía que estaba bien, pero se ha cansado un poco de que cuesten tanto y vengan tan pocos. Tanto que un día me compró 300 de segunda mano para que dejara de pedir. Pero luego le tuve que pedir un clasificador, porque si no era difícil mantenerlos ordenados.

Aside from playing Wii I have started to collect Pokémon cards. Mommy thought it was a good idea in the beginning, but she is grown tired of how much the cost and how few come in each envelop. So much so that one day she bought 300 second-hand ones so that I stopped asking. Still I had to ask for a binder, because there were many and I needed to sort them.

La verdad es que dan mucho juego. Los puedes ordenar en diferentes categorías y también puedes hacer juegos de cartas con ellos. Además, nos hemos visto todas las temporadas de dibujos animados que había en el Netflix, y me he aprendido el catálogo entero. Como dice mamá, nunca se sabe lo que le va a gustar a uno.

You can do many things with them. You can sort them in different categories and you can play card games with them. Besides, we have watched all cartoon seasons available in Netflix and I have learned the entire catalogue. As mommy says, you never know what you are going to like.

Papá se ha cambiado de trabajo. Un día vino a casa y nos dijo que iba a trabajar en Air Canada. Yo me puse muy contento porque pensé que así podría elegir la comida cada vez que vamos en avión. Él me dijo que no va a trabajar dentro de los aviones, así que no sé qué hará, pero el primer viaje que hemos hecho fue mejor que los anteriores.

Daddy has changed jobs. One day she came home and told us he was starting to work at Air Canada. I liked the idea a lot because I thought that I would be able to choose the food I eat on board. He told me he would not work in the planes, so I don’t know what he’s going to do, but the first trip we’ve made has been better than the ones we used to do before.

El viaje fue a Perú por Navidad. No fueron muchos días, pero nos dio tiempo a visitar a la familia, conocer a nuestro nuevo primo, que se llama Vicente, pasar unos días con la Abuela Chela, ir a la playa, y como no, probar cuatro piscinas diferentes.

The trip was to Peru for Christmas. It wasn’t a long vacation, but we had time to visit the family, get to know our new cousin, called Vicente, spend a few days with Grandma Chela, go to the beach, and obviously, test four different swimming pools.

Cuando vas a sitios nuevos ves cosas nuevas, como este juego que nos encontramos un día que fuimos a una casa de campo cerca de Trujillo. Se trataba de meter unas monedas pesadas por una rana. Era un poco difícil que la rana se tragara la moneda, pero por suerte había otros agujeros que te daban muchos puntos.

When you go to new places you see new things, like this game that we found one day we went to the countryside near Trujillo. You were supposed to toss some heavy coins and get them through a frog’s mouth. It was difficult for the frog to swallow the coin, but at least there were other slots where you could score many points as well.

Fue un viaje inesperado y poco planificado, pero siempre es bonito cuando vamos a Perú por Navidad y allí es verano.

It was an unexpected and unplanned trip, but it is always nice to go to Peru for Christmas when it is 

summer there.

Sin dientes / Without teeth

Si hubiera sabido que los dientes tardarían tanto en salir no habría tenido tanta prisa por que se cayeran. Está bien que venga el hada de los dientes, que últimamente está canjeando los dientes por dinero, pero se me está haciendo más complicado masticar, y en todas las fotos salgo mellado.

If I had known that teeth take so long to grow, I wouldn’t have had been in a rush for them to fall. It is cool that the tooth fairy comes to exchange them for cash, but chewing is difficult and I am toothless in all the photos.

Antes de perder los dientes fuimos a Perú. Hicimos una ronda de visitas por las casas de primos y tíos, que dieron la oportunidad de comer bien y recibir unos cuantos regalos.

Before losing the teeth we went to Peru. We made a round of visits to all cousins, uncles and aunts, which were a great chance to eat well and receive gifts.

La visita que más me gustó de todos modos fue a la casa de la tía Mónica y el tío Joel, y no porque nos dejaran salir a pasear al patio a su gato Iñaki, sino porque Joel tiene una versión moderna de la Wii, que se llama Switch, y era mi oportunidad de jugar al Mario Kart en nuevos circuitos.

The visit that I enjoyed the most though was when we went to Aunt Monica and Unable Joel’s apartment, and not because he let us take his cat Iñaki for a walk, but because Joel has a new version of Wii called Switch, and it was my opportunity to play Mario Kart in new circuits.

Después de Navidad fuimos a la playa. Era la misma en la que estuvimos dos años antes y aunque estaba un poco más llena que lo que recordaba, hay un montón de espacio para jugar. No para bañarse, porque el océano está un poco revuelto por allí, pero sí podíamos jugar en la orilla.

After Christmas we went to the beach. It was the same one we went to two years before and even though it was a bit fuller than I remembered, there was plenty of space in it to play. Not to bathe, because the ocean is rough over there, but we could play by the shore.

Estuvimos allí una semana, hasta Año Nuevo, que se complicó un poco porque Avril se cayó y tuvieron que darle puntos en la barbilla. Por suerte no fue muy grave y pudimos quedarnos hasta la media noche.

We stayed there for a week, until the New Year, which got complicated because Avril fell and she got stitches in her chin. Fortunately it was not very serious and we could stay up until midnight.

Hablando de Año Nuevo, este año hice una lista de diez resoluciones para 2019:

1. Lavarme solo los dientes
2. Limpiarme bien el culete
3. Ducharme yo solo
4. Vestirme solo
5. Atarme los cordones
6. Comer berenjena
7. Pedir las cosas por favor
8. Jugar con la Wii y la iPad sólo viernes y fines de semana
9. Ayudar a papá a quitar la nieve y a mamá con el jardín
10. No pelear con Avril 

Speaking of New Year, this year I made a list of ten resolutions for 2019:

1. To brush my teeth by myself
2. To clean well my bum
3. To shower by myself
4. To get dressed by myself
5. To tie up my laces
6. To eat eggplant
7. To say please when I ask for something
8. To play with the Wii and the iPad only on Fridays and weekends
9. To help Daddy with shoveling and Mommy with gardening
10. Not to fight with Avril

Firmé la lista y empecé a hacer cruces cada día que cumplía con la resolución. Algunas eran más fáciles que otras. Lo de los cordones y la berenjena me fue así así, pero otras eran muy fáciles. Tenía tantas marcas que tuve que pegar con celo más papel para poder seguir apuntándolas.

I signed the list and I started to make checkmarks for every day I met my goal. Some of them were easier tan others. Tying up laces and eating eggplant were so-so, but others were very easy. I had so many checkmarks that I had to tape another piece of paper to keep adding them.

En el colegio me iba bien. Me seguía pareciendo fácil y cuando me dieron las notas había muchas Aes. Yo creo que Avril le pica un poco que saque más Aes que ella.  

In school everything went well. It continued to look easy and when I got my report card there were many As. I think that Avril is a bit annoyed that I have more As than her.

Un día en enero fuimos a un partido de los Raptors. Era el regalo de cumpleaños de Avril para el que tuvimos que esperar a que hubiera un partido en sábado. Estuvo divertido ir al estadio, aunque se me hizo un poco largo. Eso me pasa porque siempre me voy a la cama a mitad de los partidos y papá me dice el resultado final al día siguiente por la mañana.

One day we went to see a Raptors game. It was Avril´s birthday present but we had to wait for a game to be on a Saturday. It was fun to go to the arena, although it felt a bit too long. That happens because I always go to bed in the middle of the game and daddy tells me the score the next day in the morning.

Otra de las resoluciones del Año Nuevo (esta la escribí en la lista de la clase de español) era aprender a esquiar. El año pasado me había quedado con las ganas y me dio rabia que me diera miedo, así que se lo dije a mamá para que supiera que estaba preparado.

Another New Year resolution (this one I wrote in the list from my Spanish class) was to learn how to ski. Last year I would have liked to do it but I was mad I got scared, so I told Mommy so that she knew I was prepared.

Mamá lo organizó para las vacaciones de primavera. Primero fuimos a Quebec City, para conocer un sitio nuevo. Era bastante bonito, pero hacía bastante frío para ser el mes de marzo.

Mommy organized it for March Break. First we went to Quebec City so that we could get to know a new place. It was nice, but it was cold for March.

Después fuimos a Mont Tremblant. El primer día Avril y yo teníamos clase con un instructor los dos solos. Me dio un poco de miedo, pero después de un rato entendí cómo funcionaba y en poco más de una hora estábamos subidos al telesilla para bajar por la pista verde.

After we went to Mont Tremblant. The first day Avril and I had lessons with an instructor for the two of us. I was intimidated, but it didn’t take me long to figure out how it worked and it less than one hour we were up the lift to ski on a green run.

Yo me caí ocho veces, pero no dolía porque íbamos despacio. Avril sólo tres, pero a la tercera no sé qué le pasó que cayó en mala postura y se rompió la pierna. Yo no me enteré de nada, porque iba por delante, pero para cuando llegué abajo supe que algo no iba bien.

I only fell eight times, but it didn’t hurt because we were going down slowly. Avril fell only three, but the third time I don’t know what happened: she fell in a bad posture and broke her leg. I didn’t even realize, because I was ahead of her, but when I arrived to the base I knew something was not right.

Avril ya no pudo esquiar más. Yo aún tomé otra clase, pero tuvimos que volver pronto a casa y al final Avril se tiró tres meses con la pierna escayolada y en muletas. Mala pata, porque había cumplido mi resolución y lo estábamos pasando muy bien.

Avril could not ski any longer. I still took another lesson, but we had to return home early and in the end she had to spend three months with a cast on crutches. Bad luck, because I had met my goal and we were having a great time.

El resto de la primavera fue un poco distinto por ello, aunque la única actividad que Avril se perdió fue la natación. Por lo demás, seguimos con el piano, los conciertos del colegio, las clases de español, y hasta tuve que ir a ver su función de teatro, que la verdad se me hace muy larga todos los años. Le quitaron las muletas a tiempo para la fiesta de fin de curso. Aunque aún cojeaba, era otra cosa para todos.

The rest of the spring it was different because of it, even though the only activity that Avril missed was swimming. Otherwise, we continued with piano, school concerts, Spanish classes, and I had to go and watch her theatre play, which turns out to be very long every year. She got rid of the crutches in time for the school-end fair. Even if she limped a bit, it was much better for all of us.

Mamá sigue experimentando con los deportes para ver cuál me gusta, y este año me apuntó a jugar al baseball. Piensa que como no hay que moverse mucho y la fuerza cuenta se me puede dar bien. Sólo han pasado unas semanas por ahora, pero de todas las cosas que se supone que tenemos que hacer lo único divertido es cuanto toca batear.

Mommy continues experimenting with sports to see which one I like, and this year she signed me up to play baseball. She thinks that because you don’t need to move much and strength matters, I may be good at it. It’s only been a few weeks so far, but from everything we are supposed to the only fun part is batting.

Yo creo que el siguiente que tenemos que probar el baloncesto. El año pasado no llegaba a la canasta, pero a veces juego en el colegio y le estoy cogiendo el truco. Además, los Raptos siguieron jugando bien y casi todas las mañanas, cuando le preguntaba a papá cómo habían quedado, los Raptors habían ganado.

I think that the next one we need to try is basketball. Last year I could not reach the basket, but now I play at the school gym and I’m figuring out how it works. Besides, the Raptors kept playing well and almost every morning, when I asked Daddy how the game had finished, the Raptors had won.

Se plantaron en la final y, aunque no podíamos ir a verlos en vivo, les animábamos desde casa como hace la gente que va al estadio. ¡Al final ganaron la NBA! Papá dice que puede que pase mucho tiempo hasta que ganen otra vez. Yo de momento ya tengo ganas de que empiece una nueva temporada.

They made it all the way to the final and, even though we could not go to the games live, we cheered from home like those who were at the arena. In the end they won the NBA! Daddy says that it may take many years for them to win again. For now I am just looking forward to the next season to start again.

Y poco después llegó mi cumpleaños, que siempre llega a tiempo para cerrar el curso y empezar las vacaciones de verano. No hicimos nada complicado. Fue en casa con unos cuantos amigos, que es como más se disfruta.

And soon after my birthday arrived, always in time to close the school year and start the summer holidays. We didn’t do anything complicated. It was at home with a few friends, which are the best birthdays.

El regalo que más me gustó fueron estas peonzas modernas que me regaló mamá y que estrenamos bajo la atenta mirada de Gris en la distancia.

The gift I liked the most was this game of modern spinning tops that Mommy bought me and that we used for the first time under Gris' attentive gaze.
