Yo también Shopkins / Me too Shopkins

De tanto oir a Avril dar la tabarra con los shopkins al final he acabado también atraído por los muñequitos. El caso es que Avril está más interesada en cuántos tiene y cuáles son, revisa listas, compara con sus amigas y prepara los intercambios, mientras que los pobres shopkins se pasan casi todo el día almacenados.

After hearing Avril talk so much about shopkins I have ended up attracted to them as well. The fact is that Avril is more interested in how many she has and who they are, she checks lists, compares with friends and arranges trades, while the poor things spend most of their time in storage.

Para mejorar su calidad de vida empecé por sacarlos a pasear en mis coches, o les hacía una casa con el Lego. Ahora tengo un maletín que me sirve para llevarlos por la casa para que no estén aburridos. También ayudo a Avril con el inventario, aunque ella es la experta en nombres y las temporadas.

To improve their quality of living I started taking them out for a walk in my cars, or I built them a house with Lego. Now I have a briefcase that I use to move them around in the house so that they are not bored. I also help Avril with stock management, although she’s the expert in names and seasons.

El buen tiempo ha estado un poco perezoso este año y hemos tenido que volver a ponernos las chaquetas más de lo que nos habría gustado. Lo que hemos hecho es aprovechar cuando ha hecho bueno para ir a jugar al parque.

The good weather has been lazy this year and we have had to wear jackets longer than we would have liked. But every time we have had a good day in the weekend we have taken advantage of it and gone out to play in the park.

En el apartado deportivo volví a Sportsball y aunque me lo pasé bien, sobre todo en las clases de fútbol y baseball, eché de menos que Avril viniera conmigo. Ahora mamá me ha apuntado a fútbol, donde me tienen completamente equipado.

On the sports side I went back to Sportsball and even though I had fun, mostly in the soccer and baseball lessons, I missed Avril alongside. Now mommy has signed me up to soccer, where they have me completely equipped.

La semana pasada llegó la Abuela Chela, justo a tiempo para mi cumpleaños. Es la primera vez que lo he celebrado a lo grande, con mis amigos del Busy Bee, algunas amigas de Avril, Anthony y Kay. Por un lado me daba un poco de corte que hubiera tanta gente pendiente de mí, pero me hacía mucha ilusión. Y como he estado en muchos cumpleaños, ya me sabía cómo funcionaba, lo que hizo el momento más manejable.

Last week Grandma Chela arrived, just in time for my birthday. It was the first time that I have had a big celebration, with my friends from Busy Bee, some Avril’s friends, Anthony and Kay. On one side I felt a bit shy about so many people looking at me, but I was very happy about it. And I have been in so many birthday parties lately that I knew how it worked, which made it more manageable.

A los pocos días, como ya es costumbre, teníamos la graduación en el Busy Bee, que es otro evento que pone a prueba mi miedo escénico. No puedo decir que estuviera excitado, y no me dio como para ponerme a cantar con mis amigos, pero aguanté bien en el escenario y al final me dieron mi diploma y mi premio de ciencias.

A few days later as it is tradition now, we had the Busy Bee graduation, which is another even that puts to test my stage fright. I cannot say that I was excited, and I did not get to the point of singing with my friends, but I withstood the moment and in the end they gave me a diploma and the science award.

Angry Birds / Angry Birds

Este año el invierno ha sido un poco raro. Por un lado, porque no ha nevado mucho y cuando ha nevado se ha quitado rápido, y por otro, porque nos hemos mudado a la casa de al lado. No sé muy bien por qué. Será cosa de mayores.

This year the winter has been a bit odd. On one hand, because it has not snowed a lot and when it has snowed it has melted fast; on the other, because we have moved next door. I don’t know well why. It must be a grown up thing.

En un par de días y casi sin darnos cuenta estábamos en otra habitación y en otro cuarto de juegos. Muchos juguetes que habíamos perdido de vista aparecieron durante la mudanza y fue emocionante descubrir los secretos de la nueva casa.

In a couple of days and almost without realizing we were in a different bedroom and another playroom. Many toys that we had not seen in ages showed up during the move and it was exciting to discover the secrets of the new house.

El día de Navidad un montón de regalos aparecieron debajo del árbol. A mí Papá Noel me dejó más coches, aunque mis intereses empiezan a extenderse a otras áreas. Un coche es un coche y un camión mucho mejor, pero hay vida más allá de las ruedas. Por ejemplo las bolas. Ya sé, hubo un tiempo en que los coches eran una mejora sobre las pelotas y ahora estamos yendo marcha atrás, pero esto es diferente.

On Christmas’ Day lots of presents appeared under the tree. Santa Claus brought me cars, although my interests are diversifying to other areas. A car is a car and a truck much better, but there is live beyond wheels. For example balls. I know, there was a time where cars were an improvement over balls and now we are regressing, but this is different.

Uno de los regalos, que llegaba vía el Abuelo Javier, era un juego para construir una estructura en la que ponías canicas en la parte de arriba y bajaban por sitios diferentes según lo hubieras montado. Lo pasamos muy bien probando distintas construcciones y persiguiendo las canicas por el cuarto de juegos.

One of the gifts, arriving via Grandpa Javier, was a game to build a structure where you placed marbles in the top part and they rolled down following different paths depending on how you set it. We had a great time trying different constructions and chasing the marbles around the playroom.

A los pocos días fuimos al Museo de Ciencias de Ontario y había una exposición con una estructura gigante en la que unas bolas bajaban por rampas, daban vueltas, subían por una noria, bajaban escalones, subían otra vez, y vuelta a empezar. Era parecido al juguete del abuelo pero mucho más grande. Era fascinante.

A few days later we went to the Ontario Science Centre and there was an exhibition with a giant structure where balls rolled down ramps, turned around, went up a wheel, down steps, up again, and it started over. It was like grandpa’s toy but much bigger. It was fascinating.

Durante el invierno papá y mamá me apuntaron a clases para aprender nuevos deportes. Tenía mucha ilusión por aprender a patinar. Había visto a Peppa Pig y tenía la técnica preparada: empujar, empujar y deslizar. Pero nadie me había dicho que antes de empujar había que tenerse en pie sobre una cuchilla y que resbalaba tanto. Todavía no me explico cómo papá, mamá y Avril lo podían hacer. El tenis me resultó más fácil y de hecho me ha gustado mucho.

During the winter time daddy and mommy signed me up to lessons to learn new sports. I was very excited to learn how to skate. I had seen Peppa Pig and I had the technique down pat: push, push and glide. But nobody had told me that before pushing you have to stand on a blade and that it was so slippery. I cannot explain yet how daddy, mommy and Avril could do it. Tennis was easier and in fact I have enjoyed it very much.

Pero lo que se me da bien de verdad es jugar a los Angry Birds. Hasta este año habían sido poco más que unos peluches cabezones o unos dibujos en mis calzoncillos. Había visto el juego y me parecía muy complicado, pero ahora que he aprendido me sé todos los trucos para pasar pantallas y siempre que tengo un rato libre practico el tiro parabólico.

But what I really do well is playing Angry Birds. Up until this year they were little less than big-headed stuffies or stickers on my undies. I had seen the game and it seemed complicated, but now that I have learned I know all the tricks to pass each level and whenever I have the chance I practice the parabolic throw.

En marzo nos fuimos todos en coche a un sitio que se llama Washington. La parte del viaje me pareció interesante, ya que tuvimos mucho tiempo para ver dibujos en la iPad. Como estaba lejos tuvimos que hacer noche en la carretera y quedarse en hoteles es siempre divertido. Pero cuando llegamos, dejamos el coche en el hotel, cogimos el metro, y caminábamos a todos los sitios. Nunca usé mucho el cochecito desde que empecé a caminar, pero esta vez creo que lo eché de menos.

In March we all went on a road trip to a place called Washington. The time we spent in the car was interesting, given that we had time to watch cartoons in the iPad. Because it was far we had to sleep on the road and staying in hotels is always fun. But when we arrived, we left the car in the hotel, we took the subway, and walked all the time. I have never used the stroller much since I started walking, but this time I believe I missed it a bit.

Fuimos a museos, pero de todo lo que vi me quedo con los peces del Museo de Historia Natural. ¿Quién quiere ver dinosaurios, osos, arañas o pájaros disecados, cuando puedes ver a los peces nadar en la pecera?

We went to museums, but from everything I treasure the most the fish at the Natural History Museum. Who wants to see dinosaurs, bears, spiders or stuffed birds, when you can see fish swimming in the fish tank?

Mamá estaba pendiente de que florecieran los cerezos y todos los días mirábamos el pronóstico y chequeábamos los árboles. Avril y yo recogíamos flores intentando ayudar, pero creo que éstas no eran las flores que mamá esperaba ver.

Mommy was on the lookout for the cherry blossom and every day we looked at the forecast and checked the trees. Avril and I picked up flowers trying to help, but I don’t think these were the flowers that mommy was looking forward to seeing.

También fuimos fuera de la ciudad, a un parque con unas cataratas, donde tuvimos más suerte recolectando piedras que encontrando las famosas flores de cerezo.

We also went outside of the city, to a park with waterfalls, where we were more fortunate collecting pebbles than finding the famous cherry blossom.

Abejarucos Azules / Blue Jays

Papá no andaba desencaminado cuando dijo en verano que los Blue Jays estaban detrás de algo especial. Al final se clasificaron para los playoffs y aunque no llegaron a las World Series pude lucir con orgullo la camiseta y la gorra que mamá me había comprado.

Daddy was not off base when he said in the summer that the Blue Jays were after something special. In the end they classified for the playoffs and even though they did not made it to the World Series I could proudly wear the shirt and hat that mommy had bought.

Antes habíamos vuelto a la rutina del Busy Bee, un poco diferente porque Avril ya no viene conmigo: ahora se monta en un autobús todas las mañanas enfrente de casa y se va a un colegio que está más lejos. Como todo artefacto con ruedas, el autobús me fascina, así que yo también voy a la parada con ella, y hasta me he comprado un autobús escolar de juguete.

Earlier we had returned to the Busy Bee routine, slightly different because Avril does not come with me anymore: instead she takes a bus every morning in front of our house and goes to school far from home. Like any other device on wheels, the bus fascinates me, so I also go to the stop with her, and even I have now a school bus toy.

El tío Javier vino de visita y también me trajo un camión de Perú. Fue divertido porque como se instaló en el sótano con los juguetes nos pillaba a mano para jugar con él. El camión peruano es un poco más delicado que mis coches de metal, pero al ser de madera y hecho a mano queda bien con el resto de la colección.

Uncle Javier came to visit and he also brought me a truck from Peru. It was fun because he slept in the basement close to our toys and he was always around to play. The Peruvian truck is a bit more delicate than my metal cars, but handmade and wooden it fits well in my collection.

Un día mamá nos llevó de excursión a LEGOLAND, que es como hacerse pequeñito y caerse en el cubo de las piezas del Lego. Había algunas cosas espectaculares, como una reproducción de los edificios de Toronto, pero nada como algo con ruedas para llamar mi atención.

One day mommy took us on an excursion to LEGOLAND, which is like shrinking until you are small and falling in the Lego parts bucket. There were spectacular designs, like a Toronto downtown reproduction, but nothing like something on wheels to catch my eye.

En Halloween Luca, Claudia y Clyde vinieron a casa para juntarse con Avril y conmigo para hacer truco o trato. Aunque estaba lloviendo, eso no nos impidió armarnos de bolsas y salir a la calle, con tanta prisa que se me olvidó cambiarme las pantuflas.

On Halloween Luca, Claudia, and Clyde came home to join Avril and I to go trick or treat. Though it was raining we got our bags and went out, with such haste that I forgot to leave the sleepers at home.

No me molestó en absoluto, y lo pasamos en grande hasta que un árbol empezó a mover las ramas y a gritar. Entonces se me quitaron las ganas de estar en la calle a oscuras y me di cuenta de que tenía mojados hasta los calzoncillos. Una vez pasado el susto quedaron varias semanas de golosinas.

It did not bother me at all, and we had a great time until a tree started to move its branches and yell at us. Then I did not want to be out in the dark anymore and I realized that even my underwear was wet. Once I recovered from the scare I enjoyed the candy for a few weeks.

El otoño es época de cumpleaños y a mí me tocan más porque me invitan los niños de mi clase pero también los amigos de Avril. En los cumpleaños siempre hay algo con lo que jugar, puede que alguna actividad de grupo, y la tarta nunca falta. Así fue en el cumpleaños de Avril, aunque me quedo con la tarta y las manualidades, porque a mí no me pillan en la pista de baile.

The fall is time for birthdays and I have more because not only my classroom friends invite me, but also Avril’s. In every birthday there is always something to play with, frequently a group activity, and the cake never fails. That was how things worked in Avril’s birthday, where I stuck to the cake and the craft, because when the music played I was nowhere close to the dance floor.

Vida sin pañales / Life without diapers

Se ve que el verano es el momento adecuado para dejar el pañal, pero a mí nadie me lo había dicho. Sí es cierto que mamá había colocado un orinal visiblemente en el baño y que había comprado calzoncillos de coches, motos y aviones, pero no veía la conexión.

Apparently summer is the appropriate time to stop using diapers, but nobody had told me. It is true that mommy had placed a potty conspicuously in the washroom and that she had bought underwear with cars, motorcycles and planes, but I did not connect the dots.

Así que un día no hubo pañal, y se me escapó. No pasó mucho: había más calzoncillos. Al cabo de un par de horas ocurrió otra vez, pero me di cuenta de cómo funcionaba, y ése fue el último accidente. Me costó un poco cogerle el truco al número dos, pero eso no se escapa tan fácilmente.

So it came the day where there was no diaper, and I had a leak. Not a big deal:  there were more pieces of underwear. Two hours later it happened again, but I realized how it worked, and that was the last accident. It took me longer to figure out number two, but that does not leak out easily.

Unos días más tarde llegaron la abuela Chela y Óscar, lo que incrementó nuestras visitas al parque, y con ellos a los columpios. Ya puedo hacer muchas más cosas, como escalar por las paredes o subir por los toboganes. Lo malo es cuando estás en el lío y te acuerdas de que no llevas pañales.

A few days later Grandma Chela and Oscar arrived, and with them here we had more frequent visits to the park and subsequently to the playground. I can do many more things now, like climbing up the walls or climbing up the slides. The problem is when you are into it and you remember that you don’t have diapers.

Sólo estuvieron un par semanas y poco después nos fuimos a España. Me hizo ilusión ver a los abuelos, pero luego me agobié con tanta novedad: los primos se llevaron a Avril nada más llegar y me aburría, Pre era más grande de lo que recordaba y me daba miedo, y aunque me hicieron regalos, echaba de menos mi rutina, mi espacio y mis coches.

They were here for a couple of weeks and after they left we went to Spain. I was happy to see Grandma Nieves and Grandpa Pablo, but so many changes overwhelmed me a bit: the cousins took Avril away right when we arrived and I got bored, Pre was bigger than I remembered and he scared me, and even though I receive presents, I missed my routine, my space, and my cars.

Las cosas cambiaron para mejor cuando un amigo del abuelo me dejó una moto para desplazarme por el pueblo y cuando encontré el castillo inflable del garaje. A partir de entonces los paseos se hicieron más interesantes y mi autoestima subió cuando iba por la calle.

Things changed for good when a friend of grandpa’s lent me a motorcycle to move around the town and when I found the jumping castle in the garage. From there on the strolls were more interesting and my self-esteem went up when we were on the street.

Al poco de llegar nos fuimos de viaje a visitar a primos y tíos y pasamos unos días en la playa. Ya no me daba miedo meterme en el mar y lo pasé en grande buscando cangrejos, descubriendo las algas, o corriendo delante de las olas.

Soon after we arrived to Spain we went on a trip to visit cousins, uncles and aunts and we spent a few days on the beach. I was not scared of the sea anymore, and I had a great time looking for crabs, discovering algae, or running in front of the waves.

Por el camino nos dio tiempo a bañarnos en la piscina con más primos en Valladolid o tocar la batería en Osorno.

On our way to the beach we had time to have fun in the swimming pool with more cousins in Valladolid and play the drums in Osorno.

También hicimos turismo cultural, pero después de un día viendo edificios antiguos, me quedo con el helado relajante en la Plaza Mayor de Salamanca, que dice papá que es distinto a un café con leche relajante en la Plaza Mayor de Madrid.

We also went on cultural trip, but after a full day viewing old buildings, my favourite moment was having a relaxing ice cream in Salamanca’s Plaza Mayor, which according to daddy is different from having a relaxing cup of café con leche in Madrid’s Plaza Mayor.

Aunque hicimos varias excursiones, pasamos la mayor parte del tiempo en el pueblo, donde con la moto y la experiencia adquirida estaba cada vez más a gusto. Incluso Pre ya no me asustaba y me gustaba jugar con él y leerle mis libros.

Even though we made some other trips, we spent most of the time in grandpa’s town, where I grew more and more comfortable with the motorcycle and the acquired experience. Pre was not scary anymore and I enjoyed playing with him and reading him my books.

Y casi sin darnos cuenta los días se pasaron volando y nos volvimos a Canadá, lo que tenía ganas de hacer para reencontrarme con mis coches. Papá por su parte lo agradeció porque andaba todo el día pendiente de los Blue Jays pero no podía ver nada de la racha histórica en la estaban. Mientras yo tan feliz con mi gorra.

And almost without realizing it days flew by and we came back to Canada, which I was looking forward to in order to reunite with my cars. Daddy was also relieved because he was always checking on the Blue Jays but he could not watch anything of the historic streak they were on. Meanwhile I was happy with my hat.

Al llegar fue el cumpleaños de papá y como era en fin de semana nos fuimos a pasar el día a una isla. Fue toda una aventura: montamos en el triciclo, visitamos un pequeño zoológico, viajamos en barco, fuimos de picnic, y comimos un helado junto a la playa. Me gustó tanto que quería volver a la semana siguiente.

When we arrived it was daddy’s birthday and because it fell on a weekend we went to spend the day to an island. It was a great adventure: we rode the tricycle, visited a small zoo, travelled on a boat, went on a picnic, and ate ice cream by the beach. I liked it so much that I wanted to return the following weekend.

En resumen, un verano ajetreado y bastante completo. Y aunque ya soy más mayor e independiente, aunque ya voy solo al Busy Bee, aunque ya puedo expresarme bien (en inglés), y aunque ya no necesito pañales, todavía sigo siendo Chiquichú.

In summary, it was a busy and comprehensive summer. And even though I am older and more independent, even though I go alone to Busy Bee, even though I can express myself well (in English), and even though I don’t need diapers anymore, I am still Chiquichu. 

Listo para viajar / Ready to travel

Este año empezamos la primavera con unas vacaciones en la playa, lo cual siempre es bienvenido después de un largo invierno. Mamá me compró una maleta para que pudiera llevar mis cosas: mis coches, mis peluches y mis cuentos, es decir mi entourage.

This year we started the spring with a trip to the beach, which is always welcome after a long winter. Mommy bought a suitcase for me so that I could bring my things with me: my cars, my stuffies, and my books, i.e. my entourage.

Fuimos a un sitio que se llama Cayo Coco, en Cuba, y el viaje fue doblemente especial porque allí nos encontramos con la abuela Chela y con los tíos Javier y Mónica, que parece que tienen experiencia en cosas de playa.

We went to a place called Cayo Coco, in Cuba, and the trip was twice as special because we met there with Grandma Chela, Uncle Javier and Aunt Monica, who seem to be experienced in beach matters.

Hicimos un montón de cosas: nos bañamos en la piscina y en la playa, jugamos con la arena, y un día nos fuimos a ver cocodrilos. Este era el aspecto que teníamos por las mañanas cuando salíamos de la habitación.

We did a lot of different things: we bathed in the pool and also in the sea, we played with the sand, and one day we went to see crocodiles. This is how we looked in the morning when we left the room for the day.

Por las noches en el camino a los espectáculos de animación mirábamos el cielo, que estaba lleno de estrellas y papá nos cantaba la canción de “look at the stars”.

In the evenings, on our way to the entertainment shows we looked at the sky, which was full of stars, and Daddy sung to us the song “look at the stars”.

En definitiva, muchas emociones y mucha diversión. Lástima que durara tan poco. Ahora cuando veo estrellas en Toronto le digo que me la cante otra vez, porque me recuerda a las vacaciones.

In short, we had a lot of emotions and fun. Too bad it was so short. Now when I see stars in the sky in Toronto I tell him to sing the song again, because it reminds me of our holidays.

El resto de la primavera fue más parecido a lo que recordaba del año pasado: paseos en triciclo al Mill Pond a jugar en los columpios, visitas al zoo y a la granja, excursiones de fin de semana, y tardes en el jardín jugando a la pelota o haciendo pompas de jabón.

The rest of the spring was very similar to what I remembered from last year: strolls in the tricycle to Mill Pond to play at the playground, visits to the zoo and the farm, weekend trips, and afternoons playing with balls or bubbles in the backyard.

Por las noches añadimos Paw Patrol a la lista de dibujos animados que Avril y yo vemos antes del cuento que papá y mamá nos leen, antes de darnos un besito y apagar la luz para dormir.

We added Paw Patrol to the evening cartoon lineup that Avril and I watch before the book that Daddy and Mommy read to us, before they give us goodnight kisses and we turn off the light to sleep.

Ya sé decir muchas más cosas e incluso hago frases enteras, aunque me atasco un poquito al arrancar. También me he aprendido el abecedario, que es algo así como ABC QRS TUV ...

I know how to say many more things now and even I can build long sentences, although I stutter a bit before I get going. I have also learned the alphabet, which is something like ABC QRS TUV ...

El día de mi cumpleaños fue también el día de la graduación del Busy Bee. Mira que ya lo hemos hecho un par de veces, pero aún me impone ponerme delante de tanta gente y me asusté un poco hasta que localicé a papá y a mamá entre el público.

This year my birthday and the Busy Bee graduation happened to be on the same day. No matter how often I have practiced it, it is still imposing for me to stand up in front of so many people, and I got scared until I found Daddy and Mommy among the audience.

Al acabar la graduación para celebrar mi cumpleaños nos fuimos todos a un parque acuático en Niagara Falls y pasamos ahí el fin de semana. No todas las atracciones eran para mí, pero encontré un par de ellas con las que mojarme mientras dejaba atrás los terribles dos.

When the graduation was over we all went to a water park in Niagara Falls to celebrate my birthday and we spent the weekend there. Not all the attractions were suited for me, but I found a couple where I could get wet while I left behind the terrible two.

Entourage / Entourage

Que me gustan los coches no es ningún secreto, pero parece que las noticias han llegado al polo norte, porque este año Papá Noel llegó cargado de coches por Navidad: grandes y pequeños, de plástico y de metal, con motor y sin motor.

The fact that I like cars is not a secret, but it seems as though the news have reached the North Pole, because this year Santa showed up with a lots of cars in Christmas: big and small, plastic made and metal made, both motorized and not.

El más espectacular es un Lightning McQueen teledirigido, pero con el que me lo paso mejor es con un juego de coches que dan vueltas en una pista persiguiéndose todo el rato. A veces papá desmonta la pista, la vuelve a montar con otra forma distinta, y los coches de vuelta a la persecución.

The most spectacular one is a Lightning McQueen with remote control, but the one I enjoy the most is a race track where cars chase each other all the time. Sometimes daddy disassembles the track, sets it up in a different way, and the cars go again at chasing each other.

El abuelo Javier vino a visitarnos después de Navidad. Él también debía haber recibido la circular y me trajo otro Lightning McQueen de buen tamaño. Aunque a él no le gustaba jugar con los coches, nos reímos mucho juntos los días que estuvo por aquí.

Grandpa Javier came to visit us after Christmas. He also had received the memo and brought me a fair sized Lightning McQueen. Even though he did not like to play with cars, we laughed a lot together the days he was around.

Desde que tengo la cama la rutina de ir a dormir ha cambiado. Ahora Avril y yo vamos juntos, después del Go Diego Go y el Pocoyó de rigor. Una vez en el cuarto papá y mamá nos leen un cuento a cada uno. Mis preferidos hasta ahora han sido el tren Thomas y Smash and Crash.

Since I have my new bed the night routine has changed. Now Avril and I go together to sleep, after the mandatory Go Diego Go and Pocoyo episodes. Once in the bedroom daddy and mommy read a book to each other. My favourite ones so far have been Thomas the train and Smash and Chash.

Parte del protocolo es colocar en la cama los amiguitos que vienen conmigo: mi osito, los conejos, las cabras, y los coches y camiones que están en la lista. Mamá lo llama mi entourage (séquito) y son fundamentales para que yo pueda dormir bien.

An important part of the protocol is to place in my bed the little friends that come with me: my teddy bear, the bunnies, the goats, and the cars and trucks that make it to the list. Mommy calls it my entourage and they are crucial for me to sleep well.

Este invierno he seguido con el deporte los fines de semana. Papá me llevaba todos los sábados a mi clase de Sportsball, donde cada semana jugábamos a un deporte distinto. Los que más me han gustado han sido el fútbol (venía entrenado de la temporada anterior) y el baloncesto.

This winter I have continued playing sports on weekends. Daddy has taken me every Saturday to Sportsball, where each week we played a different sport. The ones that I’ve enjoyed the most are soccer (after my learning from the previous season) and basketball.

El día de la última clase nos fuimos a visitar el acuario al acabar. Yo no sabía muy bien qué esperar. Al principio me daba un poco de miedo porque estaba oscuro, pero una vez que me di cuenta de que los peces no iban a atraversar el cristal, me quedé más tranquilo.

The day I had the last class we went to visit the aquarium right after. I did not know very well what to expect. In the beginning I was a bit scared because everything was dark, but once I realized that the fish would not go beyond the glass, I was more comfortable.

Había tiburones, estrellas de mar, rayas, erizos, medusas y peces de todos los tamaños y colores. Me gustó tanto la excursión que desde ese día he añadido un delfín a mi entourage.

There were sharks, starfish, rays, sea urchins, jelly fish and fish of any size and colour. I liked the outing so much that from that day on I have added a dolphin to my entourage.

Tiempo de decir adiós / Time to say good-bye

Hay veces en la vida en que las cosas se terminan. No son ésos momentos de estar triste, sino de decir adiós, mirar hacia el futuro con ilusión y disfrutar de lo que venga.

There are times in life when things come to an end. Those are not moments to be sad, but an opportunity to say good-bye, look at the future with excitement, and enjoy whatever comes.

Primero, el chupete. Es 9 de octubre y estamos camino de Perú. Ropa en las maletas, regalos, juguetes que no falten, y la iPad, claro. Por primera vez viajo en un avión con mi propio asiento, lo que hace que separados por el pasillo: yo con mamá y Avril con papá. Y mamá mira a papá y le dice: “¡además del asiento del coche, se nos ha olvidado traer el chupete!”

First, the soother. It is October 9th and we are on our way to Peru. Clothes in the suitcases, gifts, toys always required, and the iPad, of course. For the first time I travel on my own seat, which makes us be split by the aisle: I am with mommy and Avril with daddy. Mommy looks at daddy and says: “besides the car seat, we have forgotten to bring the soother!”

¡Así, sin avisar, con miles de kilómetros de por medio! Gracias a que tenía mucho sueño de la fatiga del viaje y la excitación del momento, se me olvidó que me hacía falta. Como diría papá, visto con perspectiva, una dependencia menos.

Like that, without warning, with thousands of kilometres in between! Thanks to the fact that I was tired and excited from the trip, I forgot I needed it. Like daddy would say, looking at it in perspective, it’s good to have one less dependency.

Una vez en Trujillo llegó la diversión. La abuela había hecho acopio de pelotas y coches e infló una piscina de juguete en el patio. No hacía mucho calor, pero suficiente para darse un chapuzón y reír de buena gana con Avril.

Once in Trujillo the fun started. Grandma had piled up balls and cars and inflated a pool for us to play in the courtyard. It was not very warm, but enough to take a dip in and laugh out loud with Avril.

Unos días más tarde volvimos a Lima, donde teníamos una actividad distinta cada día: unos días íbamos de visita con papá y mamá, otros con la abuela Chela, y otros nos quedábamos con la abuela y con la tía Maritza cuidando de su nueva nieta Alana.

A few days later we went back to Lima, where we had a different activity every day: some days we went on a visit with daddy and mommy, others with Grandma Chela, and others we stayed with grandma and Aunt Maritza, taking care of her new granddaughter Alana.

Segundo, el cochecito. A estas alturas el cochecito se había convertido prácticamente en un accesorio de viaje. En verano salíamos a pasear en triciclo, en el mall o voy andando o en el coche de bomberos, y en general me gusta más empujar el coche que subirme en él. Venía bien en el aeropuerto y cuando tocaba una siestecita de camino, pero a Alana le venía mejor, así que se lo regalamos.

Second, the stroller. By now the stroller had almost become a travel accessory. In the summertime we went out on the tricycle, at the mall I walk or ride a fireman truck, and in general I prefer to push the stroller than being in it. It came handy at airports and when I wanted to take a nap on the go, but Alana could make a better use of it, so we decided to give it to her.

Sigo sin tener muy claras las fronteras entre el inglés y el español, pero yo vocalizo bien y por lo que se ve la gente me entiende; al menos la abuela Chela.

The frontiers between English and Spanish are not clear for me yet, but I articulate well and it seems as though people can understand me; at least Grandma Chela can.

Hay dos expresiones muy útiles que sirven para decir muchas cosas y que están entre mis favoritas: “open it” (ábrelo) que viene a indicar un cambio de estado (abrir, cerrar, encender, apagar, pegar, despegar,…) de cualquier cosa (tarro, luz, libro, caja, TV,…) y “up in the sky” (arriba en el cielo) que es sinónimo de más arriba y que se usa para mostrar dónde está la luna, un avión, el techo, una burbuja o una aguaya, quiero decir, una ardilla.

There are two very useful expressions that you can use to say many things and are among my favourite: “open it” which indicates a change in state (open, close, turn on, turn off, stick, unstick …) of anything (jar, light, book, TV…), and “up in the sky” which is a synonym of higher and that you can use to show where the moon is, or a plane, the ceiling, a bubble, or an aguaya, I mean, a squirrel.

Tercero, la cuna. Después de dos semanas durmiendo en diferentes camas llegó la hora de volver a casa y no me gustó nada la idea de regresar al confinamiento de mi cuna. Papá y mamá se dieron cuenta y a los pocos días me compraron una cama con una colcha y una aguaya, quiero decir una almohada, de coches y camiones. Fue el mejor regalo que me podían hacer después de tanta despedida.

Third, the crib. After two weeks sleeping in different beds it was time to get back home and I did not like the prospect of sleeping in my crib. Daddy and mommy realized and a few days later they bought a bed with a duvet and an aguaya, I mean, a pillow, with cars and trucks. It was the best gift they could come up with to cope with so many farewells.

Este otoño he ido a clases de fútbol. Aquí en Canadá complican un poco el aprendizaje, lo que quizá explica su ineptitud para este deporte, pero yo me lo pasé fenomenal todos los fines de semana y la verdad es que se me da bien dar patadas al balón. El monitor me llamaba Diego Costa. Papá dice que eso le pasa porque no tiene más de 20 años y que si fuera un poco más mayor tendría referencias más notables.

This fall I have attended soccer lessons. Here in Canada they complicate things a bit, which likely explains their ineptitude for the sport, but I had a great time each weekend and the truth is that I have a knack for kicking the ball. The instructor called me Diego Costa. Daddy says that that happens because he’s barely 20 and if he were a bit older he would have more relevant references.

Poco después de volver de Perú fue el cumpleaños de Avril. Invitó a sus amigos del Busy Bee pero le salió un poco femenino, ya que quitando a Anthony y a mí todo eran niñas, lo cual devaluó el nivel de la fiesta. La tarta también era femenina: rosa y con flores, pero por dentro estaba bien buena. Tanto que estoy entre la tarta y la sopa pho vietnamita para elegir entre los momentos culinarios del año.

Soon after returning from Peru Avril celebrated her birthday.  She invited her friends from Busy Bee but the outcome was a bit feminine, given that other than Anthony and me everyone else was a girl, which brought down the value of the party. The cake was also feminine: pink with flowers, but inside it was yummy. So much so that I’m debating between the cake and the Vietnamese Pho soup to select the food moment of the year.
