¿Qué es eso? / What’s that?

Given that the winter did not seem to end we decided to go and find the spring somewhere else. Mid-March we took cucky (my quack quack ducky) and we went to Japan, where my cousins from Spain live.

Japan is far away, although it’s difficult for me to explain how far. In both trips I fell asleep in the plane what seemed to be an entire night, but when we arrived the night came around again very quickly. It was odd because after each trip I was very sleepy during the day and very hungry at nights.

Many people live in Tokyo and around half of them wear a mask. Every day we went out to get to know different places, but it was not easy to stroll around because the streets don´t have sidewalks. Most of the time we caught the train to go from one place to another, but the best looking one was the one that took us to Kyoto. This was not a chu chu train, because you did not even notice when it moved, and it did not go slow by any means.

In Kyoto there also was a lot of people, but less masks. There were many temples and women dressed up with robes and with layers of paint that frightened.

Because my cousins had to go to school I could not spend much time with them. A day on a weekend though we all went to see a big man who seemed to have fallen asleep while sitting. We enjoyed running around him, even though we had a scare in the end when a hawk took the sandwich I was about to it away from daddy´s hand.

Cars are my favourite toy. Nothing against balls, don’t get me wrong, but cars have moved up to a higher level. Besides there are cars everywhere: daddy has a car and mommy does too; the neighbour mows the lawn with a car; there are big cars on the streets, small ones to play at home, with wings to fly, and with a frog on top to walk them around.

One of the issues of enduring such a long winter is that I did not have many opportunities to exercise my gross motor skills. Alternatively, mommy has found an indoor playground where we can go to play when the weather is not good.

Mommy thought it was a good idea that I went to swimming lessons, but honestly I have had enough this year with learning how to walk to get complicated with water movement. After a few weeks I have become accustomed to being wet, but getting my head under water or the showers after was too much.

In the end, after a long wait, the weather turned the corner and we could start to go outside to play and blow bubbles, go for a walk, to the playground, or to the zoo. As I exercise more I am walking faster and faster and I’m becoming a whiz on the slides.  Besides I’m learning a lot of words: I know the names of many animals, of my friends too, and of the things I need, and if there is something that I don’t know what it is then I ask: what’s that?

Mi primer viaje a España / My first trip to Spain

A little bit before Christmas we left the snow behind us in Toronto and I took my haircut to Spain, where it was winter time like here, but there was no snow. In any case it was cold and we were lucky that the only suitcase that did not get lost was the one with our coats.

I was very happy to meet Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves again after not having seen them in almost one year and a half. What I did not expect was Pre to be so big. As soon as we crossed the door he jumped on me and even though I knew he wanted to play with me, he gave me a big scare. During a couple of days I did not like when he came around me, but one week later I think it was him who wanted to lose sight of me. In between we had a great time playing together.

Cousin Katia showed up over there too, although I don’t know well how that happened, as my understanding is that Peru is not close to Spain. She liked so much being with us that she decided to come along in our trip to the North when we went to visit daddy’s family.

We went to Laguardia, where we celebrated Christmas and I received a chu-chu train, which matched with the Pocoyo Lego set mommy had bought me. From there we went to Osorno and Valladolid, where I discovered that I had more cousins than I had imagined. Avril and I were a bit intimidated with so many people, but in the end, as always, we had a good time among laughs and cuddles.

After the family tour, we went back to Aranjuez, to grandpas’ home and we spent a few quiet days before returning to Canada. From Spain we had heard about the ice storm in Toronto, but we could not picture how it was until we arrived and found the house surrounded by snow, broken trees with the branches on the ground, and on top of it, the heating was not working.

We ended up sleeping in a hotel for a couple of days until they fixed the heating and it took a bit longer than that to get in sync with the winter routine, and even today we still have a skating rink in the driveway.

The day after our return it was my first at my new daycare, Busy Bee, which is the same one Avril goes to, but I only knew it from visits. In the beginning I missed the heavenly peace from Kids & Co but I got used to it soon and the truth is that I have a lot of fun now.

The winter has kept hitting us impenitently with lots of snow and lots of cold, which has given us very few chances to go out, and when we have attempted to do it, like the day went to the Richmond Hill winter festival, I did not have a good time.

But the matter everyone was watching for and I’m glad to have finally left behind is the one related to my gross motor skills. I leave here proof that I can walk now.

Poco a poco / Baby steps

A couple of months have gone by since my last post and the displacement issue has become a matter of top priority. Mommy was not happy with my method and she has ended up seeking professional assistance. In the last few weeks I have learned how to stand up, how to crawl and how to go up and down the stairs. I love pushing the walker around the house but I have not dared walking without help yet.

The fall is a very varied season. We had time to go out on trip on short sleeves, go out in the cold to pick up pumpkins, eat turkey on Thanksgiving, dress up on Halloween, and stay home because it was snowing.

On Halloween I dressed up as a rhinoceros, which is a big and smiley animal, just like me. Mommy came to pick me up early from daycare and Avril and I had a lot of laughs while other children knocked the door and we gave them candy.

One day I had a cough attack in the middle of the night and I almost choked. Mommy and daddy were scared and they took me to the hospital, where they give me a medicine and told me that if I coughed again I had to go out for a walk in the cold, and that if it was not cold enough I could put my head in the freezer. What a weird piece of advice!

Grandma Chela showed up one day all of the sudden and that meant more action and strolls than usual. Avril and I had a great time turning everything upside down and playing in the backyard while daddy and mommy picked up the leaves and sorted everything out for the winter.

In the middle of all this Avril’s birthday arrived. With so much practice she was more than ready to carry out the protocol. The difference this time is that she dressed up for it and princess' essence filled everything up. Look at the face I had.

In addition to improving my movement I have also learned how to say some things: “mama”, “ma” (when I want more of something), “papa” and the variations “papi” and “daddy”, and the first one I got to say and that I control the best: “ball” – nothing to do, by the way, with my head after mommy decided that I needed to have my haircut evened out.

Pelotas / Balls

A couple of months have gone by and I keep focused on the balls topic. I have balls of different sorts: rubber balls, plastic balls, rag balls, leather balls… Indeed I don’t care what they are made of, you just grab them with one or two hands and throw them as far as you can, in any direction, and then you go after them.

After my birthday Auntie Monica arrived and together with Grandma Chela we went to spend a weekend to a cabin north of Toronto. It was a quiet place, by a lake, surrounded by trees and animals. We had a great time eating from the barbecue, playing different games, and strolling around by the lake.

I know that everyone would like me to walk by now, but they don’t realize that I have grown fast and I need time to feel safe on my feet. For me safety is important and I have found this way of moving around that meets all the requirements of speed, reliability and lack of risk. Besides the hip motion helps my ball throwing.

Now that I can move better I play more and more with Avril. Sometimes she teases me a bit, but if she crosses the line I yell at her and that’s it. What I like the most, aside from throwing balls, is to take toys out of their box and scatter them around on the floor. Daddy tries to convince me to tidy them up, and from time to time I play along, but just to take them out again.

Another thing that mommy would like is that I eat by myself, but what I like is to be spoon fed and to be held while I’m given the milk bottle. If I had to do it by myself I would not be able to fill in the spoon appropriately, nor I would achieve the right bottle inclination, and that would mean spoiling a moment of pleasure. If something works, why changing it?

Cambios / Changes

The month of June started with important changes. Mommy started to work all of the sudden and I went from staying the entire day with her to going to a place to play with other children. In the beginning it surprised me a bit, but I got used to the new routine soon, and the fact is that I enjoy it.

Daddy drops me off to and picks me up from daycare, and during the day I play as much as I want, I eat a lot, and I have a crib for me to take two daily naps. The caregivers are very pleasant and they like to hold me in their arms… until they get tired. Besides they know Avril and they are very kind with her when she comes to see me from time to time.

Grandma Chela came mid-month and right when she arrived we celebrated my birthday. I did not know whether it was mine or Avril’s, given that she had been rehearsing for some days and she sang shouting her head off.

I think they tried to fool me with the day, because grandma’s pictures are timestamped and they show a date a couple of days after my birthday. It is alright that we waited for grandma, but for the record I have realized, just in case someone thinks I’m just a waste of space.

They gave me a few toys as gifts, although my favourite one was a set of balls, conveniently rubber made, to throw around at home. Avril also had her gift, which made her continue celebrating my birthday as though it
was hers.

Un mundo de sabores / A world of flavours

Fortunately a few teeth in the upper side of my mouth have joined the two that I had, and now the meals have become even more interesting. Funny how excited I was with bread and fries, I did not know what I was missing. In the beginning mommy gave me bits and pieces from her plate, but now I have my own for myself and every day I’m looking forward to meal times.

The spring has not been precisely warm, but comfortable enough to start going out and enjoying activities outdoors. Early in April we went to Rochester, a city in the United States that is close to Toronto if you go straight, but not as much when you go by car, because you have to surround Lake Ontario.

I had never been in the United States, but the truth is that is very close and when you get there, it looks as though you are still in Canada. We traveled in the van and with the DVDs, the naps, and the snacks mommy brought, the trip flew by.

Later on Grandpa Javier, who lives in the US but had never been to Canada, came to visit us. Grandpa is not very skillful with babies, but he tried his best. Although he was here only for a couple of days we had time to get to know the city and to go the Niagara Falls, which is like the bathtub faucet but larger. It was kind of scary.

In May we went on vacation to the beach in Mexico. Before I took a few swimming lessons with mommy to start training, and even though I was scared in the beginning, I ended up enjoying it. In Mexico, some days we went to the beach and some to the swimming pool, mainly because Avril wanted variety, but what I really liked was the buffet restaurant. There were lots of dishes to try and they changed the menu every day. I said no to baby food and stated clearly that I did not want to let go the chance to try new flavours, because the world is full of them and they are there for a reason.

I did not know what to expect when we came back from the summer days in Peru, where it seems as though winter is summer, or is it the other way around? The first days it was alright, cool, i.e. zero degrees, but then it started to be really cold, under -20 I mean, and then to snow, and then cold, and then it snowed again, and it’s almost spring and there is still snow on the ground. Daddy says that the winter is taking revenge on us because we went away to the heat in Peru.

With this outlook we have not had the chance to go to many places. I have spent most of the time at home with mommy, enjoying the indoors warmth and some changes.

After having spent a few months sleeping in daddy’s and mommy’s bedroom I moved to Avril’s room, where I had a crib for a baby my size right waiting for me. The truth is that it’s not bad and we don’t disturb each other at all. In fact I now sleep through the night and I never skip a couple of naps a day.

Besides, right at our return mommy started feeding me with a spoon. In the beginning I did not know what to do and I missed my milk bottles, but I quickly realized that what I was eating was actually yummy. Eating time has become my preferred part of the day and sometimes I grow impatient if it is not ready at the right time or if the food is over and I’m still hungry.

In those circumstances mommy gives me a cookie, which used to last a lot because I did not have teeth, like in this video. But now that I have two teeth the cookie goes quickly, and what I like the most is to stay with daddy, mommy, and Avril at the table, because I always catch something else.

Now that I’m not lying down all day I can play with more things. I like to sit down and play with toys with many parts that I can pile up, and I like to jump in my jumper to stretch out my legs a bit every day.

Sometimes mommy turns on the TV while I jump, like this day when a purple lizard came out clapping. I did not know very well what it was about but while I was at it I learned how to clap.
