El invierno pasado di mis primeros pasos sobre el hielo y era cuestión de solidificarlos antes de que se olvidara lo que había aprendido. Mamá me apuntó a unas clases un poco más avanzadas que empezaron tan pronto que aún íbamos en pantalón corto al pabellón.

Last Winter I took my first steps over ice and it was necessary to firm them up before I forgotten what I had learned. Mommy signed me up for more advanced classes, which started so early that we still went in shorts to the arena.

No es que sea una bala en cuestión de velocidad pero casi no me caigo y he cogido confianza suficiente para defenderme. Esto fue el primer día, cuando todavía estaba con pies de plomo.

I am not a bullet on skates, but I barely fall and I am confident enough to manage on the ice. This was during the first lesson, when I was still moving cautiously.

En esas llegó la familia del tío Javier a pasar unas semanas. Vino Mateo, que quería hacer lo mismo que nosotros, pero aún es un poco pequeño. Para tirar piedras sí que estaba preparado.

Around that time Uncle Javier’s family came to spend a couple of weeks. Mateo also came and he wanted to do the same things we did, but he’s still young. He could through pebbles though.

Durante la semana no teníamos mucho tiempo, porque teníamos que ir al colegio, pero aprovechamos los fines de semana para ir al parque, a algunos sitios cerca de casa, e incluso pasamos un fin de semana en las Cataratas del Niágara.

During the week we did not have much time, because we had to go school but we took advantage of the weekends to go to the park, places near home, and even we spent a whole weekend in Niagara Falls.

El colegio va bien. Lo del francés no es muy complicado y lo que hacemos de sumas y restas es fácil. Y las clases de español también. Todo es fácil.

Things at school go well. French is not complicated and additions and subtractions are easy. And Spanish classes too. Everything is easy.

Me gusta ir a clase y también quedarme en el Kids Connection. Allí van niños más mayores y jugando con ellos aprendo otras cosas, como la Epic, que es un juego de habilidad con una bola metálica dentro de un laberinto esférico.

I like going to school, and also to stay at Kids Connection. There are older kids and playing with them I learn other things, like the Epic, which is a skills game with a metallic ball that you have to move through a spherical labyrinth.

Fui con mamá a comprarla y el de la tienda le dijo que era muy pequeño para la Epic. Me compró una más pequeña, Rookie, pero como era fácil al final acabé pidiendo la grande.

I went with Mommy to buy it and the man in the store said that I was too young for the Epic. She bought me a smaller one, Rookie, but because it was easy I ended up asking for the bigger one.

Este año me disfracé en serio por Halloween. Mamá se pensaba que no querría pero le dije que de esqueleto sí. Me compró el disfraz y con el maquillaje que me puso, quedé de miedo.

This year I wore a serious costume in Halloween. Mommy thought I wouldn’t want but I said that I could be a skeleton. She bought the costume and with the make she put on, I looked scary.

Y luego llegó el cumpleaños de Avril, que este año fue en casa. Vinieron sus amigas y estuvieron haciendo sus cosas de niñas. Por suerte Luca vino con Claudia y tuve un compañero para jugar a la Wii.

After that Avril’s birthday arrived, and we celebrated it at home. Her friends came by and they did girly things. Fortunately Luca came with Claudia and I had someone to play the Wii with.

Preparándome para el colegio / Getting ready for school

Este verano empezó como el año pasado, viajando a España con los abuelos y con papá para ir al pueblo, aunque era un poco distinto porque ya soy más mayor.

This summer it started the same as last year, traveling to Spain with grandma, grandpa and daddy to go to Navalacruz, though this time it was a bit different because I am older.

Por ejemplo, este año ya iba a la misma clase que Avril en el campamento de verano, y también los abuelos nos dejaban ir solos a la plaza, siempre y cuando volviéramos a casa a la hora. Como me pasaba el día preguntando qué hora era, al final nos compraron un reloj a cada uno para que no llegáramos tarde.

For example, this year I’ve gone to the same group as Avril in the summer camp, and also grandma and grandpa allowed us to go to the town square by ourselves, as long as we got back home on time. Because I spent the day asking what time it was, in the end they bought each of us a watch so that we did not get back late.

También me compraron los abuelos unas zapatillas nuevas, porque era imposible ponerse las que tenía para vestir. Como me dejaron elegir cogí las más llamativas.

They also bought me a new pair of shoes because it was impossible to put on the ones I had to dress up. They let me choose so I picked the most colourful.

Los primos llegaron a finales de julio y todos juntos hicimos muchas cosas. Lo que más me gustaba esos días era la partida de parchís con Tomás, que se convirtió en un clásico antes de comer.

The cousins arrived at the end of July and we did many things together. That I liked to do the most those days was to play parchesi with Tomas, which became a classic activity before lunch time.

Los días se pasaban entre el campamento por las mañana, las aventuras por el pueblo por las tardes, y los juegos en la plaza por las noches. A veces iba a pasear perros, a veces acompañaba al abuelo a la finca, a veces iba a recoger moras, y otras hacía peleas de palos con los otros niños del pueblo.

The days went by between summer camp in the mornings, adventures in the village in the afternoons, and games at the square in the evenings. Sometimes I went to walk dogs, sometimes I went with Grandpa Pablo to the field, sometimes I picked blackberries, and other times I did stick battles with other kids.

De vez en cuando íbamos de paseo a Ávila con los abuelos y nos dábamos una vuelta por las murallas, lo que casi siempre iba acompañado de un buen helado.

From time to time we went for a walk to Avila with the grandparents and we went up or around the city walls, which most of the times came with a good ice cream.

Cuando había actividades para los niños era aún más interesante. El año pasado no quise meterme en la fiesta de la espuma, pero este año, como era más mayor, me metí de lleno.

When there were activities for kids it was even more interesting. Last year I did not want to get into the foam at the foam party, but this year I did not think about it twice.

Hacer deberes era parte de la rutina diaria, como el año pasado. Sin embargo ahora tenía más sentido porque tenía que prepararme para el colegio grande, que me estaba esperando a la vuelta en Canadá.

Doing homework was part of the daily routine, like last year. However now it made more sense because I had to get ready for the big school, which was waiting for me at my return to Canada.

Y casi sin darnos cuenta llegaron papá y mamá a pasar unos días con nosotros y volvimos a casa, a reencontrarnos con Gris, que estaba un poco enfadado después de haber estado dos semanas solo. Y también con la Wii, con la que necesitaba ponerme al día.

And almost without realizing daddy and mommy arrived to spend a few days with us and we returned home, to reunite with Gris, who was a bit mad because he had spent two weeks by himself. And also with the Wii, whom I needed to catch up with.

Poco después empezó el colegio. Era un cambio grande, porque después de muchos años ya no iba al Busy Bee. Lo bueno es que ya sabía cómo funcionaba porque era el mismo colegio al que ha ido Avril los últimos tres años: Michaëlle Jean. Avril va a otro colegio ahora pero vamos los dos juntos en el mismo autobús.

Soon after the school started. It was a big change, because after many years I wasn’t going to Busy Bee. A good thing is that I knew how it worked because it was the same school that Avril has gone to the last three years: Michaëlle Jean. Avril now goes to another school, but we both go on the same bus.

El colegio es en francés, lo que al principio se me ha hecho un poco raro, pero las cosas que hacemos son fáciles y mi profesora además de francesa es divertida. La verdad es que me gusta ir al colegio y ya tengo amigos en clase, en el autobús y en Kids Connection.

The school is in French, which in the beginning was a bit strange, but most of what we do is easy and my teacher is not only French but also funny. The truth is that I like going to this school and I already have friends in class, in the bus, and in Kids Connection.

Llevando el tanteo / Keeping score

Esta primavera me he dado cuenta de que las cosas que aprendemos en el colegio tienen aplicación práctica. Por ejemplo, viendo deportes en la televisión reconocí los números. Siempre han estado ahí, pero ahora entiendo lo que significan.

This spring I have realized that some of the things we learn in school can actually be applied in the real world. For instance, watching sports on TV I recognized the numbers. They have always been there, but now I understand what they mean.

De todos los deportes que he visto el más interesante es el baloncesto, porque el marcador está cambiando todo el rato y puedes practicar números más grandes que en el baseball, el hockey o el fútbol. Desafortunadamente casi siempre tengo que irme a la cama antes de que los partidos se acaben pero papá siempre me dice cómo han quedado al día siguiente cuando me despierto.

Out of all the sports that I have watched the most interesting is basketball, because the score is changing all the time and you can practice with bigger numbers than in baseball, hockey, or soccer. Unfortunately most days I have to go to bed before the games are over, but daddy always tells me the score next day when I wake up.

Este año celebramos una caza de huevos de pascua en nuestra casa con los amigos del Busy Bee. Había huevos de chocolate y emoji cacas que papá había escondido por todo el jardín.

This year we celebrated an Easter egg hunt at home with Friends from Busy Bee. There were chocolate eggs and poop emojis that daddy had hid around the backyard.

Mientras mamá se había encargado de la comida y los juegos dentro de casa. Todo el mundo se lo pasó muy bien, sobre todo Avril, que le gustar organizar actividades para los amigos.

Meanwhile mommy had taken care of the food and the games inside the house. Everyone had a great time, especially Avril, who likes to organize activities for her friends.

Aunque el buen tiempo tardó en llegar, eventualmente pudimos empezar a hacer cosas afuera. Avril estaba súper empeñada en aprender a montar en bici, y ya que estábamos yo le he cogido el truco a los pedales, aunque con rueditas. Empezaron de nuevo las clases de tenis, y volvimos al zoo, que siempre es bonito en primavera, cuando los animales empiezan a desperezarse después del invierno.

Even though the warm weather took its time to arrive, eventually we could do things outside. Avril was very keen on learning how to ride a bike and I took the chance to do some pedaling, but with training wheels. We started again the tennis lessons, we got back to the zoo, which is always nice in spring, when the animals start to get active after the winter.

Los últimos meses en el Busy Bee han sido especiales, ya que nos fuimos preparando para lo que sería la última graduación. Por un lado me da pena no volver, pero lo cierto es que se me estaba quedando un poco pequeño. Los abuelos habían venido a pasar un par de semanas con nosotros y este año pudieron ver cómo es la graduación de verdad.

The last few months at Busy Bee have been special, given that we were getting ready for the last graduation. On one side I am a bit sad because I’m not going back, but the truth is that it was becoming a little small for me. Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves visited us for a couple of weeks and this year they could witness how a graduation is meant to be.

Inmediatamente después, como siempre, fue mi cumpleaños. Lo celebramos en un parque con columpios entre los árboles. El día salió un poco mojado y acabamos bastante sucios, pero fue diferente a cualquier otro cumpleaños y eso lo hizo especial para todos. Ni siquiera el hecho de darme un golpe en la cabeza hizo que cambiara el recuerdo de mi día.

Immediately after, like always, it was my birthday. We celebrated it on a treetop playground for kids. The day was a bit wet and we ended up quite dirty, but it was different from any other birthday and that made it special for all. Not even after hitting my head that day my good memory of the day changed.

Por aquellos días empezó el Mundial de Fútbol, lo que incrementó el número de resultados a seguir. Papá nos trajo un calendario para apuntar los resultados de los partidos.

Around those days the World Cup of Soccer started, which increased the number of scores I had to follow. Daddy brought us a calendar to keep track of the scores.

También seguimos la Fórmula 1, donde siempre ganan los mismos: o Hamilton o Vettel, porque tienen los mejores coches. A mí me cae bien Bottas, aunque un día le entrevistaron al llegar y pensé que no tiene la cara de alguien que se llame Bottas.

We also follow Formula 1, where the same drives always win: it’s either Hamilton or Vettel, because they have the best cars. I like Bottas, although one day they interviewed him when he arrived and I thought that he does not look like someone called Bottas.

Después de acabar el Busy Bee tuve varios días de vacaciones antes de ir a España y como los abuelos estaban aquí, me apunté a hacer cosas con ellos. Un día nos fuimos al centro y nos hicimos una excursión a la isla, que estaba casi entera para nosotros.

After finishing Busy Bee I had a few days off before going to Spain and because the grandparents where here, I took advantage to go out with them. One day we went to downtown Toronto and made trip to the island, which was almost empty for us to enjoy.

Cuando Avril terminó el colegio repetimos la experiencia y volvimos a hacer un viaje a la isla.

When Avril finished school we repeated the plan and went back to the island.

También fuimos a los columpios, al parque acuático, y seguimos practicando con la bicicleta. Nos dimos unas buenas palizas subiendo la cuesta detrás del Mill Pond.

We also went to playgrounds, to splash pads, and we kept with our bicycle practice.  We actually sweated quite a bit going up the ramps behind the Mill Pond.

Juegos de Invierno / Winter Games

¡Qué mejor para el invierno que unos juegos de invierno! Y no sólo porque este año hubiera juegos olímpicos de invierno en una ciudad de Korea que no sé pronunciar, sino porque hemos jugado a muchas cosas propias del invierno.

What can be better in winter than the winter games! Not only because this year we had Winter Olympic Games in a Korean’s city I cannot pronounce, but because we have played lots of typical winter games.

Primero fue deslizarse por la nieve. Nevó el día antes de Navidad, justo después de que llegaran la Abuela Chela y la Tía Mónica, y preparó el terreno para que pudiéramos estrenar el trineo. Y quien dice deslizarse, dice darse unos buenos revolcones también.

First it was sliding down the snow. It snowed the day before Christmas, just before Grandma Chela and Aunty Monica arrived, and it set the ground for us to break out the sled. And when one says sliding, it may well be rolling around as well.

Más tarde llegó el patinaje. Ya lo había intentado sin éxito hace dos años, pero esta vez me lo tomé más en serio. Fui a una clase semiprivada con Clyde y en unas pocas semanas ya podía mantenerme en pie y hacer lo básico.

Later on it was time to skate. I had tried it unsuccessfully two years ago, but this time I took it more seriously. I went to semiprivate lessons with Clyde and in a few weeks I was able to stand up and move around.

Luego probamos el esquí. A priori, parecía divertido. De lejos se veía a la gente bajar por la ladera contenta, pero cuando me pusieron el equipo encima aquello se volvió más complicado: que si el trozo de pizza, que te eches hacia adelante, que pongas el peso en un lado. Fue sólo para ver qué tal, porque no volvimos. Creo que será como el patinaje y la próxima vez irá mejor.

Then we tried skiing. At first glance it looked fun. From the distance you could see people sliding happily down the hill, but when they suited me up with all the equipment things became more complicated: pizza slice over here, lean forward over there, move the weight to one side. It was just to test it out, because we did not go back. I think it will be like skating and the next time it’ll be better.

Entre tanto Avril y yo descubrimos que podíamos jugar decentemente a la Wii. La abuela la había sacado del baúl de los recuerdos cuando vino en Navidad y como estábamos de vacaciones pasamos bastante tiempo jugando con ella. Cuando le cogí el truco no había quien me ganara con la bicicleta o a correr.

Meanwhile Avril and I discovered that we could play Wii decently. Grandma had unearthed it from the memory chest during Christmas and because we were on holidays we spent quite some time playing with it. When I figured it out nobody could beat me on the bike or running around.

En mitad del ajetreo un día se me cayó mi primer diente, y no hubo golpe de por medio. Se me movía un poco, pero no hizo falta mucho para que se cayera del todo. Por suerte ya sabía cómo funcionaba el tema y no me lo tragué ni se me perdió. El hada de los dientes se portó bien y me trajo un coche de juguete a cambio de él.

In the middle of the hustle one day my first tooth fell down, and nobody had hit me. It moved a bit, but it did not need much help to completely fall. Fortunately I knew how this worked and neither I swallowed it nor I lost it. The tooth fairy was good to me and she brought me a toy car in exchange.

Gris ha crecido un montón y se ha ido haciendo cada vez más dueño de su espacio. A primeros de año le compramos un juguete para que dejara de rascar en el sofá y ahora es su sitio preferido para dormir. También tiene una fuente de agua, y así ha dejado de beber de los grifos. Y todos los días a la hora de cenar viene a la cocina para que le demos su porción de la latita.

Gris has grown up a lot and he’s becoming mater of his domain. Early in the year we bought him a toy so that he stopped scratching the couch and now it is his favourite place to sleep. He also has a water fountain so that he does not need to look for faucets to drink from. And every day at dinner time he comes to the kitchen to demand his ration of soft food from the can.

En el Busy Bee no ha habido muchas novedades. Miss Kim se aburrió de darme deberes porque hacía todas la cuentas que me pedía rápido y bien, y nos hemos centrados en aprender a leer. Al principio me costaba un poco, pero de un día para otro muchas palabras empezaron a tener sentido y ya puedo leer algunos libros yo solo.

There are not many news from Busy Bee. Miss Kim got tired of giving me homework because I did all the additions and subtractions quickly and accurately, and we have focused on reading. In the beginning I found it difficult, but from one day to the next many words started to shape up and now I can read a few books by myself.

Para las vacaciones de marzo nos dieron los muñecos de Flat Harry y Flat Hilda y me los llevé al campamento de pintura donde habíamos celebrado el cumpleaños de Avril. Se apuntaron varios compañeros de clase, así que era como estar en el Busy Bee, pero pintando todo el día.

For March Break we had to take Flat Harry and Flat Hilda wherever we went and I took them to the art camp where we had celebrated Avril’s birthday. A few other classmates signed up too, so it looked like Busy Bee but painting all day.

Y para rematar los juegos de invierno, en el área de videojuegos me cansé un poco de los Angry Birds. Tenía ganas de probar el juego que Avril había empezado a jugar en la iPad hace un año que me parecía difícil. A este también le he cogido el truco y ya le gano a Avril. He llegado a la tierra azul y creo que sólo me queda la tierra púrpura para acabarlo.

And to finish with the winter games, in the video games section I got tired of playing Angry Birds. I wanted to try the game Avril had started playing in the iPad the year before, which looked challenging. I figured out this one too and now I can beat Avril. I have already gotten to blue land and I believe that only need to reach purple land to finish it off.

Lula, digo Gris / Lula, I mean Gris

Este año es el último en Busy Bee. A veces me da un poco de vértigo pensar que tengo que ir a otro colegio, pero cuando miro a mi alrededor me doy cuenta de que todo se me está quedando un poco pequeño, y no sólo la ropa.

This year it is my last year at Busy Bee. Sometimes it gives me vertigo to think that I have to go to a new school, but when I look around and I realize that everything is becoming smaller and smaller, and it’s not only my clothes.

Sigo en la clase senior, pero la mayoría de mis compañeros del año pasado se han ido y han subido los juniors. Yo soy el único que termina este año, así que parezco el padre de todos.

I’m still in the senior room, but most of my friends from last year have gone to a new school and some juniors have been promoted. I am the only one finishing this year and I look everyone’s father.

Miss Kim se sorprendió cuando llegué del verano y se dio cuenta de que lo de sumar lo tenía ya dominado, así que ahora he empezado a restar y estoy esforzándome en aprender a leer. Lo de restar es más fácil por cierto.

Miss Kim was surprised when I came back from the summer break and realized that I could easily do additions. Now I have started with subtractions and I’m trying to learn how to read. Subtractions are easier by the way. 

Lo que no estaba claro es que pasaría con mi español al volver de España. La buena noticia es que vino para quedarse. Me he apuntado a clases de español al sitio al que va Avril los viernes por la tarde, pero no hacía falta, porque ya he decidido usar el español para hablar en casa.

What was not clear at all is what would happen with my Spanish after our return from Spain. The good news is that it came to say. I have started Spanish classes in the same place Avril goes on Fridays, but I don’t need it, because I have already decided to speak in Spanish at home.

El tiempo este año ha sido espectacular en Septiembre y Octubre, lo que nos ha dado la oportunidad no sólo de pasar muchas horas afuera en el Busy Bee, sino también días en los columpios con Clyde y Luca, y con menos gente alrededor que en verano.

The weather this year has been spectacular in September andOctober, which has allowed us to not only spend a lot of time outdoors at Busy Bee, but also to go to playgrounds with Clyde and Luca, and with less people around than in the summer.

En esa época llegaron los primos de Perú. Yo les dejé mi cuarto a Fátima y a Giulia y compartí con Avril el suyo por una semana. Fuimos al Niágara, a la granja, a los columpios, e incluso hicimos una fiesta en casa para celebrar el cumpleaños de Luca. Nos lo pasamos bien jugando con ellas, pero que también era divertido tener a Giorgio, que dio sus primeros pasos en nuestra casa.

Around that time the cousins from Peru arrived. I let Fatima and Giulia use my bedroom and I stayed in Avril’s for a week. We went to Niagara, to the farm, to playgrounds, and even we had a party at home to celebrate Luca’s birthday. We enjoyed playing with them, but it was also fun having Giorgio around, who took his first steps at our home.

Cuando se volvieron a Perú empezó el otoño de verdad, el de las calabazas y Halloween. A mí lo de disfrazarme no es que me vaya mucho, pero me gusta la excursión a la granja a escoger una calabaza, y el acopio de chucherías que se consigue con el Truco o Trato. Clyde se vino con nosotros y pese a que hacía frío ese día, conseguimos un buen botín.

When they got back to Peru the fall started for good, the one with pumpkins and Halloween. I don’t like dressing up but I enjoyed the trip to the farm to pick up a pumpkin, and the pile of candy that I gathered at Trick or Treat. Clyde came with us and despite it was a cold night we got a good loot.

Y después apareció Lula, digo Gris. Se ve que de tanto pedirlo me escucharon y un día cuando llegué a casa con mamá me encontré con él y pensé que era un peluche. Al principio suponíamos que era gata y le llamamos Lula, porque me recordaba a Luna. Luego papá fue al veterinario y descubrimos que era gato. Como Lulo no sonaba muy bien le cambiamos el nombre a Gris, aunque todavía se nos escapa Lula de vez en cuando.

And then Lula, I mean Gris, showed up. Apparently after asking for it repeatedly I was heard and one day when I arrived home with mommy I ran into him and I thought it was a stuffy. In the beginning we thought it was a female cat and we called her Lula, because it reminded me of Luna. Then daddy went to the vet and we found out that he was a male cat. Given that Lulo did not sound right we changed the name to Gris, but we say Lula every now and then.

Es el mejor regalo que me han hecho nunca. Me río tanto con él que papá dice que parezco un saco de la risa. Se pueden hacer tantas cosas con él: correr, saltar, tirarle pelotas de papel, jugar con los coches, hacerle cosquillas. Papá me dice que si le chincho mucho se puede hacer malo, pero yo creo que no, porque es bueno, y cuando me ha arañado ha sido sin querer.

He is the best present I have ever had. I laugh so much with him that daddy says that I am going to laugh my head off. You can do so many things with him: running, jumping, throwing paper balls, playing with cars, tickling him. Daddy says that if I bother him much he may become mean, but I don’t think so, because he is good, and when he has scratched me it has been unintentionally.

Por la noche no dejo que entre en mi habitación, porque quiere jugar y no me deja dormir, y además la toma con mis peluches. Cada día cuando vengo del colegio ha capturado uno distinto: a veces le toca al delfín, a veces a la cabra, a veces al suricato, pero el que más palizas se ha llevado es uno de los pandas.

At night I don’t let him stay in my room, because he wants to play and does not let me sleep, and moreover he takes it out on my stuffies. Every day when I come back from school he has caught a different one: sometimes it’s the dolphin, sometimes the goat, sometimes meerkat, but the one that has had the biggest beatings has been one of the pandas.

Y es que no le hace falta mucho para encontrar diversión. Un día es la lavadora, otro el envoltorio de un bombón, otro una planta, y otro el bolso de mamá.

It does not take much for him to find something to play with. One day it is the washing machine, another a chocolate wrap, a plant, or mommy’s purse.

Este año Avril celebró su cumpleaños con un grupo pequeño y como sus amigas tienen hermanos en mi clase del Busy Bee al final había tantos amigos míos como amigas suyas. Además de la fiesta tuvimos una clase de pintura, y la verdad es que no hay como aprender a pintar con ayuda, porque a todos nos quedó muy bien.

This year Avril celebrated his birthday with a small group of friends and because they have brothers and sisters at Busy Bee in the end there were as many friends of mine as hers. We had the party and a painting class, and the truth is that there is nothing like learning how to paint with help, because all of us did a great job.

Y como siempre, después del cumpleaños de Avril empezó la cuenta atrás para la Navidad. Tuve que salir a cantar en el concierto y aunque sigue sin gustarme, ha sido la primera vez que he subido al escenario sin miedo. No es cuestión de montar lío ahora que no sólo soy el más grande, sino también el más mayor.

And like every year, after Avril’s birthday the countdown to Christmas started. I had to come out and sing in the concert and even though I don’t like it yet, it has been the first time that I’ve gone on the stage without fear. It is not right to kick a fuss now that that I’m not only the biggest boy, but also the oldest.

Mientras en casa nos estábamos preparando para las fiestas con los adornos y el árbol, pero gris se pensó que era un parque de atracciones para él y después de unos días lo único que quedó fue el árbol pero ya sin ningún adorno.

Meanwhile at home we were getting ready for the holidays with decorations and the Christmas tree, but Gris thought it was an amusement park for him and after a few days we had to leave the tree without any ornament.

¡Ya sé hablar en español! / I know how to speak in Spanish!

Todos sabían que entendía el español y que podía decir unas frases sueltas si hacía falta. Lo que no sabían es que había mucho más fondo y que sería capaz de manejarme con soltura. Bueno, yo tampoco lo sabía. Tuve que ponerme en una situación donde no quedaba otra alternativa y acabó saliendo.

Everyone knew that I could understand Spanish and that I could say a few sentences here and there. What they did not know is that there was much more depth and that I would be able to get by with ease. Well, I did not know either. I had to put myself in a situation where I did not have an alternative and it just came out.

Resulta que el día que los abuelos volvían a España también nos íbamos nosotros, pero mamá no. Mira que había oído decir varias veces que íbamos a pasar el verano en España, pero de esa parte no me había enterado. Después de preguntar un rato me di cuenta de que papá iba, pero que se volvía a Canadá. Por suerte se quedó unos días con nosotros mientras me hacía a la idea.

It happens that the day grandpa and grandma were returning to Spain we were going too, but mommy did not. I had heard many times about our upcoming summer in Spain, but I had not caught that part. After a few questions I found out that daddy was coming with us, but he was going back to Canada. Fortunately he stayed a few days with us while I was coming to terms with the idea.

De entrada no me gustaba mucho el plan, pero no tardé en acostumbrarme al nuevo entorno y los abuelos se encargaron de que no nos faltara nada. Por ejemplo, helados. Primero íbamos al bar a comprarlos con el abuelo Pablo, pero luego la abuela Nieves descubrió que había un camión que los repartía y los trajeron al por mayor a casa.

In the beginning I was not in love with the plan, but it did not take long for me to get used to the new environment and grandma and grandpa made sure we did not miss anything. For example: ice creams. First we used to go to the bar with Grandpa Pablo to buy them, but then Grandma Nieves discovered a truck that delivered them and we started to get them wholesale.

Estaban un poco preocupados por si no me entendía con la gente, pero una vez que empezó el campamento de verano se dieron cuenta de que no había problema. Iba todas las mañanas con Avril, pero estábamos en diferentes grupos. Luego volvíamos a casa y después de comer tocaba helado, siesta y deberes. He aprendido a sumar muy bien y también caligrafía.

They were concerned that I would not be able to make myself understood with people, but once the summer camp started they realized it was not a problem. I went every morning with Avril, but we were in different groups. Then we got back home and after lunch we had ice cream, nap, and homework. I have learn additions very well and also calligraphy.

A veces íbamos a dar un paseo y veíamos las fincas del abuelo, los animales del campo y podíamos comer moras o trepar árboles. Lo de trepar no se me daba muy bien, pero sí me gustaban los animales. Un día nos dejaron un conejo que se dejaba tocar, y nuestra vecina Carolina tenía un gato con el que jugaba un rato todos los días. Se llamaba Luna.

Sometimes we went for a walk and saw grandpa’s lands and farm animals and we could eat blackberries and climb trees. Climbing was not my thing, but I truly liked the animals. One day we borrowed a rabbit that we could pet, and our neighbour Carolina had a cat with whom I played every day. Her name was Luna.

Luego llegaron los primos y se revolucionaron las cosas: verbenas, juegos, “caña” diaria con tapas, viajes a la piscina y excursiones a la montaña. Era un poco lío, ya que aún teníamos campamento y deberes, pero sacábamos tiempo para todo. También me pegué un par de sustos y acabé con unos cuantos golpes y arañazos. Es lo que tiene estar rodeado de niños mayores, algunos de ellos un poco toscos.

Then the cousins arrived and things revolutionized a bit: open-air dances, games, daily “beer” rounds with tapas, trips to the swimming pool, and excursions to the mountains. It was a little messy, given that we still had camp and homework, but we were able to find time for everything. I also had a couple of scares and ended up with a few bumps and scratches. It’s what it happens when you are surrounded by older kids, some of them quite rough.

Los días se pasaron volando y cuando papá y mamá llegaron (antes de lo que me había imaginado) ya tenía las heridas curadas. Tenía un montón de cosas que enseñarles: las moras, los columpios (de niños y de mayores), el acopio de helados, el sitio alto, y por supuesto a Luna, y le dije a mamá que yo también quería tener un gato.

Days flew by and when daddy and mommy arrived (earlier than I would have imagined) my wounds had healed. I had lots of things to show them: the blackberries, the playgrounds (for kids and grownups), the ice cream stash, the high-high place, and of course Luna, and I told mommy that I also wanted to have a cat.

Los primos ya se habían ido y al poco tiempo el campamento se acabó. También se acabaron los juegos en la plaza, así que con menos compromisos pudimos dedicarle tiempo a mamá y papá y hacer excursiones todos juntos: a las montañas más altas, a Ávila o a coger renacuajos al río.

The cousins had already left and soon after the camp was closed. The games in the town square were over too, and with less commitments we could spend some time with mommy and daddy and go together on trips: to very high mountains, to Avila, or to chase tadpoles in the river.

Cuando volvimos a Canadá Avril estaba con mucha pena, pero a mí me gustaba estar en casa, prepararme para el cole, y preguntar más veces cuándo vamos a tener un gato. Sin embargo teníamos muchos recuerdos del verano y cada cosa que pasaba nos acordábamos del pueblo, de los abuelos y de los primos.

When we returned to Canada Avril was very sad, but I liked to be back home, get ready for school, and also ask again when we are going to have a cat. We had lots of memories from the summer though and everything that happened reminded us of the village, the grandparents and the cousins.

Un día viendo el US Open de tenis, nos acordamos de cuando veíamos el tenis con el abuelo Pablo. Avril estaba al tanto del marcador, pero yo quería que Nadal ganará para que hiciera sus “moves”.

One day watching the tennis US Open, we remembered when we used to watch tennis with Grandpa Pablo. Avril was keeping up with the score, but I just wanted to see Nadal win to see his moves.

Premio al más inquisitivo / Most inquisitive award

Creo que me he hecho un poco más mayor. No sólo porque uso dos tallas más de lo que me corresponde, ni porque cada vez puedo jugar a más cosas con Avril, ni porque he tenido mi primera crisis existencial, sino que con la edad he adquirido un mejor domino del lenguaje, que me permite hacer preguntas aún más elaboradas.

I think that I have grown a bit older. Not only because I wear two sizes over what my age indicates, nor because I can play may more things with Avril, nor because I have had my first existential crisis, but because I have acquired a better control of English language that allows me to ask more elaborated questions.

Papá y mamá se creían que sólo era con ellos, pero como han descubierto durante la graduación del Busy Bee, Miss Kim, Miss Lori y Miss Neuby también lo han experimentado en sus propios oídos y me acabaron dando el premio al estudiante más inquisitivo.

Daddy and Mommy thought that they were the only ones answering them, but as they discovered during the Busy Bee graduation, Ms. Kim, Ms. Lori and Ms. Neuby have also experienced it in their own ears and they ended up giving me the award to the most inquisitive student.

Ya que estamos con la graduación diremos que no fue mi día favorito. Lo de salir enfrente de todo el mundo a cantar no me hace ninguna gracia. Mira que deseé que lloviera mucho y lo cancelaran, pero no, lo movieron a un recinto interior y no me libré de salir al escenario. Por suerte nadie se tomó mal que no cantara y no lloré nada.

Let’s say that graduation day was not my favourite. I don’t like to stand in front of a lot of people and sing. I wished it rained so that they cancelled it, but no, they didn’t, they moved it to an indoor hall and I had to go up on stage. Fortunately nobody bothered me for not singing and I did not cry at all.

Pero esa no ha sido la única vez que he tenido que salir a la palestra. A Miss Liz se le ocurrió hacer un recital para celebrar el final del curso de piano y tuve que salir enfrente de todos los padres a tocar “el corderito de María”. Mamá y Papá estaban muy orgullosos porque salí yo solo y aunque me moría de vergüenza, toqué mis dos canciones sin dudar.

But that has not been the only time I had to go on stage. Ms. Liz had the idea of organizing a recital to celebrate the end of the piano course and I had to go in front of all the parents and play “Mary had a little lamb”. Mommy and Daddy were very proud because I went out by myself and even though I was very uncomfortable I played my two songs without hesitation.

Más divertido que todo esto fue ir a la búsqueda de huevos de pascua a casa de Clyde en Semana Santa. Corrimos mucho y en poco tiempo no quedaba huevo por descubrir, así que pasamos a correr pero esta vez detrás de burbujas para explotar.

Much more fun than all this was to go to Clyde’s house on an egg hunt for Easter. We ran a lot and in a few minutes there wasn’t an egg that we had not found, so we decided to keep running but this time trying to burst bubbles.

En el ámbito deportivo estoy muy contento del progreso en la natación. Ya puedo cruzar la piscina sin ayuda de ningún objeto flotante. Sé que tengo que mejorar el estilo, pero sólo saber que ya puedo ir a nadar sin flotador me hace mucha ilusión.

Sports wise I am very happy with my progress in swimming. I can now cross the pool without the help of any floating device. I know I have to improve my style, but knowing that I can swim without assistance means a lot to me.

Papá también me apuntó a clases de tenis en el mismo grupo que Avril. Ya tenemos nuestras propias raquetas y vamos a las mismas pistas donde juega Papá. Y aunque era el más pequeño de todos no desentonaba.

Daddy also signed me up to play tennis in the same group as Avril’s. We now have our own racquets and play on the same courts as Daddy’s. Even though I was the youngest of all I did not do it badly.

En junio llegaron los abuelos de España, a los que hace tiempo no veía. A ellos les gusta dar paseos y me llevaban muchos días al parque. A mí no me importa caminar, sobre todo si al final del camino están los columpios. Al principio no me entendía muy bien con ellos, porque ellos no hablan en inglés, aunque intentan decir cosas que no comprendo, y a mí me costaba hablar en español. Al final he optado por usar el español, porque parece la solución más viable.

In June Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves, whom I had notseen in some time, arrived from Spain. They like going for walks and they took me often to parks. I don’t mind walking and less so if there is a playground at the end of the path. In the beginning we couldn't understand each other well, because they did not speak in English, although they try so say things that I cannot grasp, and I had a hard time speaking in Spanish. In the end I've chosen to use Spanish, as it looks to be the most viable solution.

Hemos hecho muchas cosas juntos, como el día que fuimos a Stouffville y nos encontramos con una feria de coches antiguos que me gustó mucho, y que me recordó algunos de los coches de juguete que tengo en casa; o como ir a pasar el día al centro y visita el sitio de los peces (ya sé que se dice de otra forma, pero qué ganas de complicarlo si es el sitio de los peces).

We have done a lot of things together, like the day we went to Stouffville and we ran into an old cars fair, which I liked very much, as it reminded me of many of the cars I have at home; or when we went to downtown Toronto to visit the fishy place (I know it has a different name, but I don’t see the point of complicating it if it is the fishy place).

También celebramos mi cumpleaños. Esta vez fue en casa, con Luca, Joshua, Clyde, y Cole, mis mejores amigos del colegio. Sacamos un montón de juegos al jardín y jugamos al fútbol, al baseball y al golf. Joshua y Cole querían ver mis coches, así que entramos un rato para que los compararan con sus colecciones.

We also celebrated my birthday. This time it was at home, with Luca, Joshua, Clyde and Cole, my best friends from school. We took a lot of toys out to the backyard and played soccer, baseball and gold. Joshua and Cole wanted to see my cars, so we went inside for a bit so that they could compare them with their collections.

Más tarde hicimos manualidades que papá había organizado para todos los niños, y después de comer, la traca final fue la piñata. Nos reímos un montón y al final había caramelos para todos. Fue un cumpleaños distinto y difícil de olvidar. ¡Gracias Mamá y Papá!

Later on we did some crafts that Daddy had organized for the kids, and after eating, the icing on the cake was the piñata. We had such a laugh and in the end there was candy for everyone. It was a different birthday party and very difficult to forget. Thank you Mommy and Daddy!
