Después de varios años dedicados al baloncesto, este último ha sido un año de fútbol. No es que haya dejado de jugar al baloncesto, que no ha sido el caso, sino que me he decidido a jugar al fútbol también. Tantos veranos en España, con fútbol para acá y fútbol para allá, y sin ver una canasta de baloncesto, me motivaron a volver a intentarlo.
After several years
dedicated to basketball, this last one has been a soccer year. It is not that I
have stopped playing basketball, which wasn’t the case, but that I have decided
to play soccer too. So many summers in Spain, with soccer here and there,
without even seeing a basketball net, motivated me to try it again.
Antes de empezar con el fútbol, estuvimos de vacaciones en Mallorca. Al
parecer le debíamos un viaje a la abuela Chela, que quería visitar la tierra de
sus no tan lejanos ancestros.
Before starting with
soccer, we spent the holidays in Mallorca. Apparently, we owed Grandma Chela a
trip, as she wanted to visit the land of her not-so-distant ancestors.
Como era su primer viaje, la llevamos a algunos sitios que ya conocíamos, aunque no me acordaba bien de todos. Pero lo que más me gustaba era cuando íbamos a la playa.
Because it was her first
visit to the island, we took her to some places that we already knew, although
I didn´t remember all of them. However, what I liked the most was going to the
beach.
También nos hicimos una excursión en barco, como hace unos años, pero cambiando de abuela. Esta vez no tuvimos ningún susto y disfrutamos nadando donde no se toca el fondo.
We also made a boat outing,
like we did a few years ago, but with a different grandma. This time we didn´t
have any scare and we enjoyed swimming where you can´t touch the ground.
Estuvimos una semana, que aprovechamos a tope. Después Avril viajaba a Francia a pasar unos días con Savanah, mientras que el resto fuimos a Navalacruz a juntarnos con los abuelos Nieves y Pablo.
We spent a week there,
which we enjoyed through and through. After, Avril was traveling to France to
spend a few days with Savanah, while the rest of us went to Navalacruz to join Grandma
Nieves and Grandpa Pablo.
Era la primera vez que estuve con los tres abuelos a la vez, y no me puedo
quejar, porque la abuela Nieves había sacado el libro de recetas y teníamos
algo rico para comer todos los días.
It was the first time
I have been with the three grandparents at once, and I can´t complain, as
Grandma Nieves broke out the recipes book and we had something yummy to eat
every day.
Para la abuela Chela el pueblo también era una novedad. Pensamos que a lo mejor se aburriría, pero que va, le llamaba la atención todo lo antiguo y las cosas del campo.
For Grandma Chela
the little town live was a novelty. We thought she might get bored, but on the
contrary, she was very interested in all the old rustic things.
También hicimos una excursión por Segovia y Ávila, para que los conociera, y volvió muy contenta.
We also took her to
get to know Segovia and Avila and she came back very happy.
A mí me compraron un patito de goma que se me encaprichó y se vino con nosotros de viaje también.
She bought me a little
rubber duck that I fancied and it came with us on the trip as well.
Después todos se fueron y me quedé con los abuelos en Navalacruz hasta que Avril volvió de Francia. El resto del verano pasó sin muchas más novedades. No había campamentos y no me apetecía mucho salir, así que pasé mucho tiempo en casa.
After everyone left
I stayed with the grandparents in Navalacruz until Avril got back from France.
The rest of the summer went by without much news. There were no camps and I didn’t
feel like going out a lot, so I stayed at home most of the time.
Volvimos a Richmond Hill a tiempo para la vuelta al cole. La verdad es
que tenía ganas de volver a ver a mis amigos.
We came back to Richmond
Hill in time to get back to school. The truth is that I was looking forward to seeing
my friends again.
Mamá dijo que no podía seguir con los dientes así y me llevó al dentista para que me pusiera un aparato dental. Avril tenía los dientes más rectos, pero dijo que los quería tener perfectos y también se apuntó. De momento me han dicho que tengo que llevarlo durante un año y medio, mientras que a Avril con un año le basta. Ya veremos cómo quedamos.
Mommy said that I could
not continue with my teeth as they were and she took me to the dentist to get
on braces. Avril didn´t have the same problem, but she said wanted perfect teeth
and signed up for it too. For now, we have been told that I need at least one year,
and a half and Avril will be okay with one year. Let’s see how we end up.
Nuestra vecina de al lado se ha comprado una perrita y a veces nos ha
pedido que estemos con ella porque no se puede quedar sola. Se llama Motek y,
al margen de la propina, me hace ilusión cuando me avisa para cuidarla.
Our next-door neighbour
has bought a new puppy and sometimes she has asked us to stay with her because she’s
too young to be by herself. Her name is Motek and, besides the tip she gives
us, I enjoy spending some time taking care of her.
El otoño fue espectacular. Parece que cada año que pasa hace mejor tiempo en octubre y los colores son increíbles.
The fall was
spectacular. It looks as though every year there is better weather in October,
and the colours are unbelievable.
Celebramos Halloween en nuestra casa. Vinieron las amigas de Avril por un lado y mis amigos por otro. No salimos juntos, pero los dos bandos consiguieron buenos botines.
We celebrated
Halloween at our home. Avril’s friends came over on one side, and my friends on
the other. We didn’t go out together, but both teams tallied very good
bounties.
Aunque Avril hizo una fiesta de cumpleaños en casa con sus amigas, primero lo celebramos en familia haciendo algo diferente. Nos fuimos a pasar el fin de semana a Nueva York.
Although Avril had a
birthday party at home, we decided to celebrate it first as a family doing
something different. We went to spend a weekending to New York City.
La ciudad es bonita y aunque no tuvimos mucho tiempo, nos dio para pasear por Central Park:

Lo que no voy a echar de menos es el metro. Lo cogimos un par de veces y da bastante miedito. Entre el ruido que hace, lo sucio que está y la gente que viaja, te da que pensar. Mamá dice que estoy mal acostumbrado por haber crecido en los suburbios.
What I am not going
to miss is the subway. We took it a couple of times, and it was a bit scary. It
is noisy, it is dirty, and some people look off. Getting in gives you some pause. Mommy says that I’m spoiled for having been
raised in the suburbs.
Poco después llegaron las vacaciones de Navidad, y papá nos sorprendió
con su propuesta. Dijo que había plazas para ir a Nueva Zelanda y que era la
oportunidad de ir a un sitio que siempre había querido visitar. Y así, en un
pis pas nos subimos a un avión y nos plantamos al otro lado del mundo.
Soon after, Christmas
arrived, and Daddy surprised us suggesting a destination for our holidays. He
said that there were spots open in the flight to New Zealand and that this was
an opportunity to go to a country he had always wanted to visit. And just like
that, we got on a plane and showed up at the other side of the world.
Fue un viaje largo, pero mereció la pena. Los paisajes eran muy bonitos,
y aunque tuvimos que ir en coche distancias largas, los lugares que papá y mamá
eligieron tenían que verse.
It was a long trip,
but it was well worth it. The landscapes were beautiful and even though we had long
distances to cover by car, the places that Daddy and Mommy picked were must-see.

Y muchos más sitios. Pero no sólo eran las vistas, sino también las
actividades. Nos bañamos en ríos, lagos y mares a los dos lados de las islas:

wasn’t only the views, but also the activities. We bathed in rivers, lakes and
oceans, on both sides of the islands:
Nos fuimos de excursión a una montaña volcánica, donde la lluvia nos sorprendió y acabamos mojándonos.
We went on a hike to
a volcano, where the rain caught us by surprise and we ended up quite wet.
Visitamos una reserva de kiwis, que es el animal más típico del país. Al parecer, los kiwis son nocturnos y para verlos había que meterse en una cámara oscura.
We visited a kiwi sanctuary,
to see the most famous animal in the country. Apparently, kiwis are nocturnal and
to see them we had to enter a dark room.
Y el día de Año Nuevo, nos tiramos en una especie de patinete en la montaña de Rotorua.
And in New Year´s Day,
we went down a mountain in Rotorua in luge boards.
Después de tanta aventura, volver al invierno canadiense fue un poco duro, y más considerando que este año nevó más de lo habitual.
After so much
adventure, getting back to the Canadian winter was a bit hard, and more so
considering that this year it snowed more than it normally does.
Pero quedaba el fútbol. Había empezado a jugar en el otoño, pero la verdad es que cada uno jugaba a lo que podía, ya que no estábamos muy organizados.
But we still had
soccer. I had started playing in the fall, but the truth is that everyone
played on their own, without much team organization.
Papá volvía a casa todos los días diciendo que no había que hacer esto, que había que hacer lo otro. Así que un día que el entrenador dijo que no podía estar para el partido y necesitaba un voluntario para suplirlo, mamá contestó que papá podía hacerlo.
Daddy came back home
every time saying that we shouldn´t do this, or that we had to do that. So one
day, when the coach said he was not available for a match, Mommy volunteered
Daddy to do it.
Al principio no le hizo gracia, pero una vez que se había comprometido,
se lo tomó en serio. Se plantó en partido con unos papeles, nos organizó y dijo
a cada uno lo que se debía y no se debía hacer.
In the beginning he
was not happy, but once she was committed, she took it seriously. She showed up
in the match with a bunch of papers, got us organized and reminded everyone
what we should and shouldn't do.
Ganamos el partido 2-1. Pero lo mejor no fue eso. Lo mejor vino después, ya que no volvimos a perder ningún partido y acabamos primeros en la liga.
We won the match 2-1.
But that wasn´t the best part. The best came after, as we didn´t lose any more
matches for the rest of the season and we ended up first in the league.
Mientras tanto, seguí jugando al baloncesto los fines de semana y entre semana iba a un grupo con niños más mayores que entrenaban a más nivel. Ha sido complicado, ya que mi papel ha cambiado comparado con los años de la liga china, pero he aprendido mucho, y me lo he pasado muy bien con el entrenador Rob.
Meanwhile, I continued
playing basketball on the weekends and I practiced during the week with a group
of older kids at a higher level. It has been complicated, as my role has
changed, compared to how it was in the Chinese league, but I have learned a lot
and I have enjoyed being part of Coach Rob´s team.
Otra novedad en medio del frío invierno fue el cambio de coche de mamá. Ya llevaba tiempo dando la matraca con que ya no le gustaba su furgoneta, aunque a mi me parecía muy cómoda. Estuvo mirando opciones, y al final se decidió por un SUV híbrido de Hyundai.
Another piece of
news this winter was that Mommy changed her car. She had been saying for some
time that she didn´t like her van, even though I thought it was quite comfortable.
She was looking around for options, and eventually she chose a hybrid Hyundai SUV.
He de decir que una vez he probado el coche nuevo ya sé por qué mamá decía que quería cambiarlo. Y es que la tecnología ha cambiado mucho en 13 años.
I have to say that
once I had a taste of the new car, I understood why Mommy said she wanted to
chang it. The technology has changed quite a bit in 13 years.
Por Semana Santa nos hicimos otro viaje de cinco días para escapar de la
monotonía del invierno. Volvimos a Punta Cana, donde habíamos estado hace tres
años y medio, pero fuimos a otro hotel distinto.
In Easter we did another
short trip to escape the winter. We went back to Punta Cana, where we had been
three and a half years ago, but we went to a different hotel.
Como siempre disfrutamos de la estancia con todo incluido.
As always, we
enjoyed staying in an all-inclusive resort.
Pero sobre todo de las piscinas, y en este caso más, porque había una piscina tipo río, con corrientes y obstáculos, donde pasamos las horas yendo y viniendo.
But what I liked the
most was the swimming pools, and in this case even more, because there was a
riverlike pool, with currents and obstacles, where we spent the time coming and
going.
A partir de entonces, el año fue cuesta abajo. Los días pasaron deprisa a medida que se acercaba el verano.
From thereon in, the
year went by very fast as were approaching the summer.
Como la temporada de fútbol de invierno había terminado bien, me apunté a
la de verano. Ahora jugamos al aire libre y en campo grande. Al entrenador le
ha dado por ponerme de delantero, porque corro deprisa, y en un campo tan
grande, es una ventaja, y ya se ha traducido en varios goles.
Given the good
experience with the soccer season in winter, I signed up for the summer one. We
now play outdoors and it a large field. The coach has decided to have me a
striker, because I run fast, and it a field this big, that is an advantage,
which has already translated into a few goals.
Un día en junio, fui con mamá al zoológico a ayudar con una actividad de voluntariado. La verdad es que no ayudé mucho, porque lo que quería era visitar los animales. Al principio mamá se enfadó un poco con mi actitud, pero al final nos arreglamos y pudimos ver los animales, que era lo que me interesaba.
One day in June, I went
with Mommy to the Toronto Zoo to help with a charity activity. The truth is
that I didn’t help much, as I wanted to visit the animals. In the beginning Mommy
was upset with my attitude, but in the end we worked it out and we could se the
animals, which was my main purpose that day.
Y como siempre, el final del colegio coincidió con mi cumpleaños. Invitamos a mis amigos a casa y vinieron los habituales, aunque un poco más pelucones que años atrás.
And as always, the end
of the school year happened as my birthday came about. We invited my friends to
come home. Most of the usual suspects came over although with longer hairs than
in previous years.
Este verano lo pasaremos en Richmond Hill, así que seguiré jugando al fútbol, y cuando vuelva al pueblo, ya podré jugar con más confianza.
This year we will
spend most of the summer in Richmond Hill, so I will keep playing soccer, and
when I go back to Navalacruz, I will be able to play with more confidence.
