Experiencias interesantes / Interesting experiences

No ha sido este año uno de muchos cambios, pero sí hemos vivido algunas experiencias interesantes que merece a la pena compartir.

There haven’t been many changes in my life this year, but we have lived some interesting experiences that are worth sharing.

El verano fue tradicional: en Navalacruz con los abuelos. Desafortunadamente, sólo coincidimos con los primos un día, aunque aprovechamos para ir a la piscina y dar unas patadas a un balón de fútbol.

We had a traditional summer in Navalacruz with the grandparents. Unfortunately, we only coincided with the cousins for one day, although we made the most of it going to the swimming pool and kicking around a soccer ball.

También cumplimos con la tradición de cortarme el pelo en Ávila, que al abuelo le hace ilusión, y con la tradición más importante de ir de cañas a menudo, que para mí es una Fanta de limón.

We were loyal to the tradition of getting a haircut in Avila, something Grandpa Pablo is proud of, and most importantly, loyal to the tapas tradition, that for me means having Fanta lemon.

Papá y mamá vinieron a buscarnos a finales de agosto. Pasamos unos días con los abuelos y celebramos el cumpleaños de papá en Ávila.

Mommy and daddy came to pick us up at the end of August. We spent a few days with Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves and celebrated daddy’s birthday in Avila.

La vuelta al colegio fue un poco distinta, porque por primera vez Avril no venía conmigo en el autobús, ya que ha empezado a ir al instituto.

The back-to-school was a bit different, as this was the first time that Avril didn’t take the bus with me, now that she goes to high school.

Me tocaron los mismos profesores que el año anterior, Mr. Ramde and Miss Steenburg, así que la adaptación fue sencilla. Los compañeros, sin embargo, cambiaron, pero no importa porque seguí juntándome con mis amigos para jugar y en los cumpleaños.

I had the same teachers as the previous year, Mr Ramde and Miss Steenburg, which translated in a fast adaptation. My classmates were mostly new however, but it doesn’t matter as I kept getting together with my friends to play in the playground and in birthday parties.

Por Halloween, usé dos disfraces distintos: uno de día que pedí prestado a Avril, para pasar el expediente en clase, y uno sencillo de noche, suficiente para hacer caja. Este año, me fui con los amigos de clase a otro barrio, pero creo que el nuestro da mucho más de sí.

In Halloween I used two different costumes: one that I borrowed from Avril to check the box in class, and an easy one for the evening, sufficient to cash during trick or treat. This year, I went to one of my friends´ neighbourhood, but it´s clear that ours is much more profitable.

El otoño fue un poco raro porque mamá se puso enferma y estuvo varias semanas con fiebre y un aspecto horrible, sin saber muy bien lo que era. Al final le dieron un tratamiento muy fuerte, que por suerte la curó, aunque fue tan fuerte que unos meses más tarde se le cayó casi todo el pelo.

The fall was a bit strange because mommy fell ill and she spent several weeks with fever and a terrible aspect, without knowing well what was going on. In the end she received a strong treatment, which fortunately healed her, although it was so strong that a few months later she lost most of her hair.

Para celebrar que mamá estaba mejor decidimos hacer un viaje especial por Navidad. Nos fuimos a Costa Rica y resultó ser un sitio muy bonito.

To celebrate that mommy was doing better we decided to make a special trip for Christmas. We want to Costa Rica, which happened to be a very nice place.

Pasamos unos días en las montañas, donde tuvimos experiencias muy interesantes.

We spent a few days in the mountains, where we had some interesting experiences:

We walked in the jungle:

Nos bañamos en aguas termales:

Visitamos cascadas increíbles:

We visited incredible waterfalls:

Incluso presenciamos cómo un río cambiaba de color:

Even we witnessed how a river changed colours:

Y vimos animales exóticos en su hábitat natural:

And saw exotic animals in their natural habitat:

Y la estrella de los animales de Costa Rica, el perezoso. Incluso pagamos para entrar a un parque para poder verlo, para luego encontrarnos uno colgando de un árbol a dos metros del suelo dos días más tarde en un parking.

The star animal in Costa Rica is the sloth. We even paid to access a park where could see them, only to run into one hanging from a tree, two meters from the ground two days later in a parking lot.

Después de unos días cambiamos el monte por la playa. Y esta parte del viaje me gustó todavía más. No sólo teníamos piscina en la casa, sino que la playa, que era enorme, estaba prácticamente para nosotros solos.

After a few days we changed the mountain for the beach. I enjoyed this part of the trip even more. Not only we had a swimming pool at home, but the beach, which was massive, was almost empty for us alone.

Fuimos a la costa atlántica, donde el agua estaba calentita y había olas para jugar. La casa estaba tan cerca de la playa, que podíamos ir un rato a bañarnos, volver a casa a comer y luego vuelta a playa por la tarde.

We went to the Atlantic coast, where the water was warm and there were waves to play with. The house was so close to the beach, that we could go swim, get back home to have lunch, and then back to the beach in the afternoon.

Avril decía que se había dado cuenta yendo al colegio este año de que los colores del amanecer son más bonitos que los del atardecer y se empeñó en ir un día a las 5.30 de la mañana para comprobarlo. Esto es sólo una muestra, pero por las fotos que sacó papá, puede que tenga razón.

Avril said that she had realized going to school this year that the dawn colours are nicer than those at dusk and she got daddy to go one day at 5.30 in the morning to confirm her theory. This is only a sample, but based on the photos that daddy brought back, she may be right.

Pasamos allí la Navidad y el Año Nuevo, los cuatro en familia a nuestro aire. Fue una manera especial de cerrar el año y Costa Rica un lugar al que desde luego me gustaría volver.

We spent Christmas and New Year’s Day there, the family of four on our own. It was a special way to close the year and Costa Rica a place that certainly I would like to return to.

Los abuelos vinieron a visitarnos en marzo. No habían vuelto desde el año de la pandemia, cuando vinieron para un par de semanas y se quedaron tres meses. Pero esta vez fue como lo habíamos planeado, incluyendo un viaje a Portland para visitar a los primos.

Grandma Nieves and Grandpa Pablo came to visit us in March. They had not returned since the pandemic, when they came for a couple of weeks and got stranded for three months. This time though, things turned out how we had planned them, including them making a trip to visit the cousins in Portland.

El momento más memorable de la visita fue cuando fuimos a cenar a la CN Tower. Nunca había subido y las vistas eran espectaculares. Y la plataforma del restaurante giraba alrededor de la torre, así que el paisaje cambiaba según llegaban los platos.

The highlight from the visit was when we went to have dinner at the CN Tower. I had never been at the top of the tower and the views were specular. And the platform where the restaurant was rotated around the tower, so the landscape changed in between courses.

Fue una experiencia interesante y aunque les insistimos, los abuelos no quisieron quedarse para la siguiente: un eclipse total de sol.

In was an interesting experience and although we insisted, the grandparents didn’t want to stay for the next one: a total eclipse of the sun.

Era tan anticipado que hasta nos dieron la tarde libre en el colegio por no sé qué motivos de seguridad. Se suponía que lo podríamos ver desde casa, y de hecho a mediodía ya se veía que la luna estaba poniéndose delante del sol.

It had been anticipated for so long that we even got the afternoon off in school, for some sort of security reasons. It was supposed to be happening at home, and in fact around noon you could see that the moon was starting to cover the sun.

Sin embargo, papá averiguó que en Richmond Hill el eclipse era sólo del 98% y que no daría lugar a un apagón total, así que nos montamos en el coche y condujimos algo más de una hora hasta una playa en el lago Ontario que estaba en área de eclipse total.

However, daddy found out that in Richmond Hill the eclipse would only reach 98% of coverage and there wouldn’t be a total blackout, so we jumped in the car and drove for over one hour until we hit a beach by Lake Ontario that was in the path of totality.

Tuvimos mala suerte, porque se nubló con lo que no se veía el sol, pero los minutos antes del eclipse, cuando empezó a hacer más frío y el momento es que todo oscureció fueron inolvidables. Hasta Avril, que estaba aburrida con el rollo del eclipse, se espabiló cuando vio que era algo que no pasa todos los días.

We were unlucky, because it got cloudy and you could not see the sun, but the minutes before the eclipse, when the temperature dropped and the moment when everything went dark were unforgettable. Even Avril, who was bored with all the talk about the eclipse, woke up when she realized this is something that doesn’t happen every day.

Después del eclipse el resto del curso se pasó rápidamente. Sexto me ha parecido fácil, pero papá me ha dicho que no me confíe que a partir de séptimo las cosas se ponen más serias.

After the eclipse, the rest of the school year wen by quickly. Sixth grade was easy, but daddy has told me not to relax because from seventh grade on things get more complicated.

A finales de mayo vino a visitarnos el abuelo Javier. Estuvo unos días antes de ir a ver a la familia del tío Javier en Prince Edward Island. Lo gracioso es que, cuando volvió, se trajo al tío Javier y a Mateo, que se había clasificado para el concurso nacional de deletreo, que se celebraba nada menos en que Richmond Hill. No ganó, pero lo hizo bien. Menos mal que yo nunca he tenido que hacer algo así. Intimidaba.

At the end of May Grandpa Javier came to visit. He stopped by for a few days on his way to see Uncle Javier’s family in Prince Edward Island. The funny thing is that when he returned, Uncle Javier and Mateo came as well, because Mateo had classified for the National Spelling Bee competition, which happened to be in Richmond Hill. He didn’t win in the end, but he did well. Good thing that I have never had to do something like that. It was very intimidating.

Este año he jugado bastante al baloncesto. Aparte de continuar en el programa chino, mamá me apuntó a clases con los entrenadores de Elite y en una liga los domingos, buscando, sin mucho éxito, algo más de nivel para seguir mejorando.

This year I have played basketball quite a bit. Aside from the Chinese program, mommy signed up for lessons with Elite coaches and a House League on Sundays, looking without much success, a more challenging level to keep improving.

Llegó incluso a apuntarme a las pruebas de selección para un equipo competitivo en Toronto, pero eso era ya demasiado. Por ahora, estoy bien recogiendo premios en Richmond Hill.

At some point, she even signed me up for a tryout for a competitive rep team in Toronto, but that was too much. For now, I´m okay collecting accolades in Richmond Hill.

Mis amigos del colegio han perdido interés por el baloncesto y ahora jugamos al fútbol en el recreo, así que este año, cuando celebramos mi cumpleaños, eligieron jugar al fútbol como actividad para quemar las calorías de la tarta.

My friends at school have lost interest in basketball and now we play soccer in the playground, so this year, when we celebrated my birthday, they chose soccer as the outdoor activity to burn the calories from the cake.

Otra experiencia interesante este año fue recibir a una chica de intercambio en casa durante dos semanas. Papá apuntó Avril al programa y le tocará a ella visitar a la otra familia en el verano. La chica se llamaba Savanah y venía de Francia. Hicimos algunas visitas turísticas para que conociera la zona, pero lo más divertido es que hicimos más cosas en familia.

Another interesting experience this year was to receive a girl at home for a couple of weeks from a student exchange program. Daddy had signed up Avril to the program and she will visit her family in the summer. The girl was called Savanah, and she came from France. We did some tourist visits so that she could get to know the region, but the most fun was that we did more family things than normal.

Una de ellas fue incluirla en nuestra porra de la Eurocopa. Después del éxito de la porra del Mundial, volvimos a hacerlo y participaron hasta el tío Javier y Mateo. Al final España ganó la Eurocopa y Avril la porra.

One of them was including her in our Euro´24 pool. After the success of the World Cup pool, we did it again and this time even Uncle Javier and Mateo participated. In the end Spain won the Euro and Avril the pool.
