Cuartos de baño / Toilets

Ha pasado un año desde el último post y parece que poco ha cambiado, pero lo cierto es que han pasado muchas cosas, algunas que merece la pena recordar y otras que es mejor olvidar.

It’s been a year since my last post and it looks as though very little has changed, but the truth is that many things have happened, some that are worth remembering and some other that it’s better to forget.

Como es costumbre en los últimos tiempos, nos fuimos a Navalacruz con los abuelos en verano. No me apetecía mucho, porque ya el año anterior Avril no había dejado estar con ella y al no haber campamentos, por el COVID, no era fácil conocer otros niños.

As we’ve done lately, we went to Navalacruz to spend the summer with Grandpa Pablo and Grandma Nieves. I didn’t feel like it much, because the previous year Avril had not let me be with her and without summer camps, because of COVID, it wasn’t easy to make new friends.

Lo hablé con mamá, pero me dijo que la alternativa era ir a campamentos de verano aquí en Canadá. Yo le dije que mejor no. Los baños en los campamentos son horrorosos, y el papel de baño terrible.

I discussed it with mom, but she said that the alternative was to go summer camps here in Canada. I said no to that. Toilets in summer camps are terrible, and their toilet paper even worse.

Los primeros días coincidimos con los primos y aprovechamos para jugar e ir a comer con los abuelos, pero se fueron poco después.

The first few days the cousins were there, and we could play together and go out to eat with the grandparents, but they left soon after.

Como me temía, Avril no me dejó jugar mucho con ella, así que tuve que buscar otras cosas que hacer. Como posar con gente famosa:

As I feared, Avril didn’t let me play much with her, so I had to find other things to do. Like taking pictures with famous people:

Bueno, lo cierto es que eso era más que nada postureo. Lo que sí hice fue ayudar al abuelo en la finca y dar paseos por la sierra.

In reality, that was just posing. What I truly did was helping Grandpa Pablo with his trees in the field and going for walks to the mountain.

Eso fue hasta que otra vez hubo un incendio y se acabó la sierra y casi se acaba el pueblo. Estuvimos a punto de tener que irnos, porque las llamas estuvieron bien cerca esta vez.

That was until another wildfire started, and there were no more mountains, and we were near to having no more town either. We were close to being evacuated, because the flames got very close this time.

No nos fuimos del todo, pero sí a pasar el día a Ávila para no estar encerrados en casa por el humo. Comimos en un restaurante y al acabar me fui al baño. El abuelo Pablo había ido antes, y cuando volvió preguntó que dónde estaba yo. La abuela Nieves dijo que estaba en el baño, y el abuelo se extrañó porque no me había visto.

In the end, we didn’t have to leave, but we went to Avila for a day so that we didn’t have to be locked down at home because of the smoke. We ate at a restaurant and when we finished, I went to the toilet. Grandpa Pablo had gone right before, and when he came back, he asked where I was. Grandma Nieves said I was in the toilet, but Grandpa Pablo was confused because he had not seen me there.

Llegué un poco más tarde, satisfecho y más ligero, y al llegar a la mesa todos me miraban con cara rara. El abuelo me preguntó que adónde había ido. Le dije que al baño. Él decía que qué baño, si él estaba allí y no me había visto. Yo contesté que “en el de los caballos no”.

I arrived a bit later, satisfied and lighter, and when I got to the table everyone looked at me strangely. Grandpa asked where I had been. I said I had been in the toilet. He said, what toilet, as he had been there and had not seen me. I replied that not the horses one.

A los abuelos les entró un ataque de risa. Avril se empezó a reír también, aunque no sabía por qué, y yo ya por contagio. Al parecer donde yo había leído caballos ponía caballeros. Yo no sabía qué era y me fui al otro, que estaba muy limpio. Nada que ver con los de los campamentos de verano.

The grandparents had a fit of laughter. Avril started to laugh as well, even though she did not know why. It was contagious and I laughed too. Apparently where I had read “caballos” (horses) it said “caballeros” (gentlemen). I didn’t know what it meant, and I went to the other one, which was quite clean. Nothing to do with the summer camp ones.

Poco después vinieron papá y mamá a recogernos, pero aún tuvimos tiempo de pasar unos días todos juntos, e incluso de volver a hacer la excursión a Gredos, aunque Avril no quiso venir, porque estaba mejor con sus amigos.

Soon after mom and dad came back to pick us up, but we still a few days to spend time all together, and even to back to make the trek to Gredos, even though Avril didn’t want to come this time, because she preferred to stay with her friends.

Esta vez fuimos más lejos, porque ya soy más mayor, e incluso llegué a meter los pies en el Charco de la Esmeralda, más allá de la laguna.

This time we went farther, because I’m older, and even I got to dip my feet in the Emerald Pond, beyond the big lake.

Volvimos a Canadá con un par de semanas para aclimatarnos antes de empezar el colegio. Para mí era un cambio grande, porque empezaba en Beverley Acres, el colegio que va de cuarto a octavo. Me apetecía volver a coger el autobús y estar con más niños, después de cómo acabamos el curso anterior.

We came back to Canada with a couple of weeks to acclimate before school. For me it was a big change, because I started in Beverley Acres, the school that goes from fourth to eighth grade. I was looking forward to taking the bus and being with more kids, considering how we ended the previous year.

No me costó adaptarme al cambio. Me gusta que sea más grande y que haya varias canastas de baloncesto. De hecho, acabé el curso llevando el balón todos los días cuando hacía buen tiempo.

It was not difficult to adjust to the change. I like that this is a bigger school and that it has several baskets to play basketball. In fact, I finished the year taking my ball to school every day the weather was good.

El otoño pasó rápido. Parecía que todo había vuelto a la normalidad. En Halloween opté por el disfraz de fantasma, que no es complicado, tapa bien la cara, y me permite recaudar una buena ración de golosinas.

The fall went by quickly. It looked as though everything was back to normal. In Halloween I chose the ghost costume, as it’s easy to wear, covers the face, and it allows me to collect a good bounty of candy.

Y luego Avril celebró su cumpleaños con un montón de amigas. Menos mal que aún invita a Claudia, y que se trae a Luca, para que no sea el único niño, aunque la verdad es que las amigas de Avril me hacen más caso que ella.

And after Avril celebrated her birthday with a bunch of friends. Good think that she still invites Claudia, and she comes with Luca. That way I am not the only boy, although Avril’s friends treat me better than she does.

A finales de noviembre anunciaron que los niños de menos de 12 años ya se podían poner la vacuna del COVID, y allí fui yo, porque era el único sin vacunar en casa, y eso complicaba las cosas cuando queríamos viajar.

At the end of November, it was announced that kids under 12 could get the COVID vaccine, and there I went, because I was the only one unvaccinated at home, and that complicated things when we traveled.

Y hablando de viajes, se nos presentó la oportunidad de ir unos días a la playa antes de Navidad, y nos fuimos a la República Dominicana.

Speaking of travels, we had the opportunity to go for a few days to the beach right before Christmas, and we went to the Dominican Republic.

Me gustó el sitio. Me gustaba ir a comer, porque podías elegir lo que quisieras y servirte más de una vez. Me gustaba que hubiera una zona de juegos donde nos echábamos un futbolín y un veintiuno al baloncesto todas las noches antes de dormir. Me gustaba que hubiera varias piscinas para elegir, además del mar. Y incluso me gustó que pudiéramos salir y que viéramos a la tía Mónica, al tío Joel y al primo Vicente, que estaban por allí de vacaciones, pero en otro hotel.

I liked the place. I liked mealtime because you could choose whatever you wanted and have more than one serving. I liked that there was a game zone where we could play table soccer and twenty-one at basketball every night before bedtime. I liked that there were several swimming pools to choose from, besides the ocean. And even I liked that we could go out and see Aunt Monica, Uncle Joel and Cousin Vicente, who were there on holidays, but at a different hotel.

Pero lo que más me gustaba de todo es que podía pedir lo que quisiera y ¡no había que pagar! Papá decía que nada es gratis y que si no pagaba en el momento es porque ya habíamos pagado antes. Sea como fuere, a mi parecía fenomenal.

But what I liked the most is that I could order whatever I wanted, and I didn’t have to pay! Dad said that nothing is free and that if we didn’t have to pay at that time is because we had paid before. However it was, I thought it was great.

Pero al volver a casa en el avión ocurrió el incidente de la galleta. Se me fue un trozo por mal sitio y aunque tosía y tosía, a mi me parecía que algo se había quedado dentro. Me asusté mucho. Aunque se me pasó, al día siguiente me asusté otra vez con la piel de una uva. Y entonces me pareció que cualquier cosa que comiera se podía ir a los pulmones. Ni siquiera la llegada del ajolote me ayudó (aunque me gustó mucho).

But on the way back on the plane I had the cookie incident. A crumb went down the wrong pipe and even though I coughed and coughed, I felt something was stuck inside. I was scared. Although it went away, the next day I got scared again with the skin of a grape. And then I felt as though anything I ate could end up in my lungs. Not even the arrival of the axolotl helped (even though I liked it a lot).

La preocupación subió de nivel con los días y ya pensaba que me pasaba de todo. No comía ni dormía bien. Papá tuvo que llevarme al médico para comprobar que no había nada en los pulmones.

My worry went up as the day went by and I thought that I was sick with everything. Neither I ate nor slept well. Dad had to take me to the doctor to check that there was nothing wrong with my lungs.

Luego volvimos al colegio. Al principio estuvimos online, por otra ola de COVID, pero dos semanas después ya pudimos ir a clase. No lo podía soportar. Me daba miedo salir al patio y me preocupaba no estar cerca de papá y mamá por si me pasaba algo.

Then we got back to school. In the beginning it was online, because of a new COVID wave, but two weeks later we could return to the classroom. I could not stand it. I was afraid about being outside in the playground and I was concerned that I wasn’t close to mom and dad in case something happened.

Al final papá habló con el colegio y me dejaron seguir online durante unas semanas, hasta que me encontrara mejor. Y lo cierto es que poco a poco, me fui encontrando mejor. Empecé a comer otra vez y cada vez tenía menos pesadillas. Mamá me compró un reloj para que pudiera comprobar mis pulsaciones y nivel de oxígeno, y cada vez necesitaba menos respirar fuerte pare sentirme bien. Hasta empecé a ver a una psicóloga, pero para entonces era difícil explicarle lo que había pasado.

In the end, dad spoke to the school, and they let me move to remote learning for a few weeks, until I felt better. The truth is that little by little, I started to feel better. I started to eat again, and the nightmares were not as frequent. Mom bought me a watch that allowed me to check my heartrate and my oxygen levels, and I needed less to breathe hard to feel better. Even I started to see a psychologist, but by then it was difficult to explain to her what had happened.

Un día me enteré de que había una excursión en el colegio y le dije a papá que quería ir. Él dijo que si quería ir tenía que volver unos días antes al colegio, para asegurarme de que estaría bien. No fue del todo fácil, pero pasé la prueba, y poco a poco todo volvió a ser como era antes.

One day I found out that there was a field trip planned and I told dad I wanted to go. He said that if I wanted to go, I had to return to school a few days before, to make sure I would be alright. It wasn’t easy, but I passed the test, and little by little everything went back to how it was before.

Por mucho que te guste la nieve, al final del invierno siempre quieres que se pase ya. Este año lo aceleramos, porque nos fuimos a Los Ángeles por las vacaciones de primavera.

No matter how much you like the snow, at the end of the winter you want it to be over. This year we accelerated the process because we went to Los Angeles during spring break.

Papá había dicho que antes cumplir los 10 años me llevaría alguna vez a San Diego, y lo hicimos. Sólo estuvimos un día, pero me pareció una ciudad digna de compartir mi nombre con ella.

Dad had said that he would bring me to San Diego one day before I turned 10, and we did it. We stayed there only for one day, but I think it is a city worth sharing my name with.

Como alquilamos un coche, pudimos visitar varios sitios en poco tiempo. Fuimos de la costa:

La verdad es que lo pasamos muy bien. Fue una manera perfecta de poner el invierno en el espejo retrovisor.

The truth is that we had a great time. It was a perfect way of putting the winter in the rear-view mirror.

Aunque eso sí, tuvimos que hacer frente al acoso de los pájaros californianos. Primero tuvimos que defender nuestros sándwiches y patatas fritas (no todas) de las gaviotas de Malibú.

However, we had to face the harassment of Californian birds. First, we had to defend our sandwiches and our potato chips (not all) from the seagulls in Malibu.

Y luego dar esquinazo a los patos de los canales de Venecia les dio por perseguirnos.

And then dodge the ducks in the Venice channels that were chasing us.

Regresamos en pleno a la primavera. Ya no se hablaba apenas del COVID, volvieron hasta las clases de baloncesto, que llevaban dos años en pausa, y cada vez nos podíamos mover con más facilidad. Tanto, que a mamá le picó el gusanillo de viajar y quiso que fuéramos a París a primeros de junio.

We arrived home and it was now spring. COVID was not a topic of conversation anymore, basketball lessons returned, after a two-year hiatus, and there were less mobility restrictions. So much so, that mom caught the bug of traveling and organized us to travel to Paris at the beginning of June.

Fue un poco paliza, porque papá quería enseñarnos la ciudad entera, pero mereció la pena conocer algunas de las localizaciones de los dibujos de Ladybug, como la Torre Eiffel.

It was tiring, because dad wanted to show us the entire city, but it was worth getting to know some of the locations of the Ladybug cartoon, like the Eiffel Tower:

Pero también ver en persona obras de arte que he estudiado en clase, como la Mona Lisa del trabajo de biografías de Leonardo da Vinci:

Cuando ya estábamos cansados de arte, Avril y yo le pedíamos el teléfono a mamá y hacíamos nuestras propias actuaciones.

When we were tired of art, Avril and I borrowed mom’s phone, and we staged our own performances.

Al volver a Canadá el COVID se vino con nosotros. Parece que Avril fue la primera, aunque ni se enteró. Para mí fue un día de tos y fiebre, pero se pasó enseguida. Mamá estaba cansada y con molestias, aunque tardó en dar positivo. Papá estaba bien mientras estábamos nosotros malos, pero cuando le dio, le dio bien y lo pasó bastante mal durante una semana.

When we got back to Canada COVID came with us. It looks as though Avril was the first one, even though she didn’t notice it. For me it was a day with cough and fever, but it went away quickly. Mom was tired and with some discomfort, but it took time for her to test positive. Dad, who was wll when we were sick, ended up being hit hard, and he had a very rough week after.

Tanto que cuando celebramos mi cumpleaños yendo al mismo sitio de minigolf que el año pasado, aún tenía mala cara.

So much so, that when we celebrated my birthday playing minigolf in the same place as last year, his face still showed.

Una semana más tarde lo celebré con mis amigos en casa. Lo pasamos genial. Primero nos echamos un partido de baloncesto en el colegio de aquí al lado.

A week later I celebrated it again with my friends at home. We had a great time. First, we played a basketball match in the schoolyard close to home.

Luego hicimos juegos en casa. Avril organizó una yincana por el jardín y acabamos cenando pizza y comiendo tarta. Lo bueno de cumplir años en junio es que el día da mucho de sí.

Then we played games at home. Avril organized a scavenger hunt in the backyard, and we ended up having pizza and eating cake. A plus of having a June birthday is that days are long, and you can fit in a lot of things.

Poco después se acabó el colegio, las clases de arte, de baloncesto y un año en el que ha pasado muchas cosas y que, a pesar de sus altos y bajos, lo ha hecho con buena nota.

Soon after everything wrapped up: the school, the art classes, basketball, and an eventful year that, despite its ups and downs, has ended on a good note.
