El verano de 2022 empezó muy bien. Antes de ir a Navalacruz, nos fuimos a Menorca unos días. La playa estaba ahí mismo, y podíamos ir caminando a todos los sitios. El Mediterráneo nunca decepciona.

The summer of 2022 started very well. Before going to Navalacruz, we went to Menorca for a few days. The beach was right there, and we could walk everywhere. The Mediterranean Sea never lets you down.

Y lo más importante, la casa tenía piscina (¡a quién le importa si era pequeña!) donde Avril y yo rematábamos cada día.

And the most important part is that the house had pool (no matter how big or small) where Avril and I wrapped up every day.

Luego podíamos asomarnos al mar a ver el ocaso, que llenaba todo de un color especial.

After we could take a look at the sea and watch the sunset, which filled everything with special colours.

Desde allí, fuimos al pueblo, donde nos reunimos con los primos de Portland. El evento era la celebración del 50 aniversario de boda de los abuelos, que nos invitaron a comer y a pasar el día en la piscina.

From there, we went to Navalacruz, where we got together with the Portland cousins. The event was the celebration of the grandparents 50th wedding anniversary, who invited us to a restaurant and a day in the swimming pool.

Lo pasamos muy bien todos juntos. Me gusta cuando voy al pueblo y están los primos. Tengo que aprender a jugar al fútbol mejor, porque si no, es difícil seguirles el ritmo.

We had a great time all together. I like when I go to Spain and the cousins are there. I had to learn how to play soccer a bit better, as otherwise I can’t keep up with them.

Pero se fueron pronto. Avril seguía cerrada en banda y no me dejaba jugar con sus amigos. Lo bueno es que con los campamentos de vuelta después del COVID encontré unos cuantos amigos nuevos, que Tomás me dejó prestados.

But they left son and Avril kept pushing me out from her circle of friends. The good thing is that summer camps were back on after COVID and I found a few new friends that I borrowed from Tomás.

Cortarse el pelo en verano en Ávila se ha convertido en una tradición. Cuando el abuelo lo ve muy mal, me lleva a la peluquería que va él y me lo arreglan. Este el antes y el después de este verano.

Having a haircut during the summer in Avila is becoming a tradition. When Grandpa Pablo doesn’t see another solution, he takes me to the hairdresser’s he goes to and they sort it out. This is the before and after from this summer.

Mamá dice que es un poco Peaky Blinders, pero dijo que me quedaba bien, así que le pasó las instrucciones a la peluquería de Canadá cuando volvimos. No era exactamente igual, pero se empieza a notar un estilo.

Mommy says it’s a bit Peaky Blinders, but she also said I looked good in it, so she passed on the instructions to the hairdresser in Canada when we came back. It wasn’t exactly the same, but you can start seeing a style shaping up.

Papá y mamá volvieron a recogernos a finales de agosto. Como era el cumpleaños de papá, dijo que nos invitaba. Nosotros elegimos el restaurante Tres Siglos, uno de los sitios preferidos de nuestras excursiones a Ávila con los abuelos.

Daddy and mommy came back to pick us up at the end of August. It was daddy’s birthday, and he took us out to eat. We chose the “Tres Siglos” restaurant, one of the preferred destinations in our trips to Avila with the grandparents.

Cuando regresamos a casa me propuse ver Los Simpson. Papá nos había puesto un día un episodio y parecía interesante. Tienen todas las temporadas en Disney+, aunque cuando vi que había más de 600 episodios, me di cuenta de que me iba a llevar un buen rato. Lo que no esperaba es que Papá se supiera los diálogos, aunque sólo los de la primera temporada. Me contó que fue un éxito allá por 1990. Tanto, que se siguen haciendo más de 30 años después.

When we returned home, I endeavoured to watch the Simpsons. Daddy had showed us an episode one day and it seemed interesting. You can find all seasons in Disney+, although when I saw there were more than 600 episodes, I realized it would take me a while. What I didn’t expect is that Daddy knew the dialogues by heart, though only those in the first season. He told me that it was a big hit around 1990. So much so that they keep producing them 30 years later.

También les recordé a papá y mamá que me gustaría tener una Nintendo Switch. No me pidieron firmar un contrato como el de Avril, pero me dijeron que tenia que esperar hasta Black Friday que siempre hay buenas ofertas. Y así empezó una cuenta atrás de 86 días.

I also reminded mommy and daddy that I wanted to have a Nintendo Switch. They didn’t ask me to sign a contract like Avril’s, but they told me I had to wait until Black Friday because there are always good promotions. So, I started an 86-day countdown.  

El tío Javier pasó por aquí camino de su nueva casa en Canadá, en la Isla del Príncipe Eduardo, y nos reencontramos con Mateo y Zara, que ya no eran tan pequeños.

Uncle Javier came by on his way to his new home in Canada, in Prince Edward Island, and we met Mateo and Zara, who are not little kids anymore.

También visitamos al abuelo Javier en Dallas. Sólo estuvimos un fin semana, pero fue lo suficiente para comprobar que las vacas de Texas son distintas que las de Navalacruz.

We also visited Grandpa Javier in Dallas. We only were there for a weekend, but it was sufficient to find out that cows in Texas are different from those in Navalacruz.

Un día fuimos a cenar al Olive Garden y pude validar que lo que decían en YouTube es cierto. Te dicen que puedes rellenar el vaso cuantas veces quieras, pero te dan una pajita tan estrecha que casi no puedes beber.

One day we went to an Oliver Garden for dinner and validate that the Youtubers were right. They say you can have as many refills as you want, but they give you such a tiny straw that you can barely drink.

Halloween salió bien este año. Hizo buen tiempo y nos juntamos un buen grupo. Vinieron Claudia y Luca, como de costumbre, y unas amigas de Avril se animaron a probar suerte en nuestro barrio. Al final, como siempre, lo mejor fue el botín.

Halloween turned out well this year. Weather was good and we got a good group. Claudia and Luca came over as usual, and a couple of Avril’s friends decided to try our neighbourhood. In the end, as always, the best was the bounty.

A estas alturas ya habíamos tomado control de las canastas de baloncesto en el patio del colegio y teníamos partido todos los recreos. Le puse horas a practicar el bote con ambas manos y aprendí a driblar entre las piernas y por detrás de la espalda.

By this time we had taken control of the basketball nets in school and we played in every recess. I made an effort to learn how to bounce the ball with both hands and to dribble between the legs and behind the back.

También íbamos a jugar los fines de semana en familia. Papá y mamá se empeñaron en que practicáramos las entradas a canasta, porque dicen que hay que aprender los fundamentos. No sé qué historia de un tal Pepu, que decía que hay que jugar al BA-LON-CES-TO.

We also went to play on weekends as a family. Daddy and mommy wanted us to practice the layups, because they say that the fundamentals are important. Some story about someone called Pepu, who said that you have to play BAS-KET-BALL.

Lo cierto es que el consejo me vino bien, y cuando empezamos a jugar partidos con el equipo de la liga china de los fines de semana, metía casi todos los puntos yo, y casi siempre entrando a canasta.

The truth is that the advice came handy, and when we started playing matches with the team in the Chinese league on weekends, I scored most of my team’s points and almost all of them were layups.

Al final, para sorpresa de nadie, llegó el Black Friday. Lo que no llegó fue ningún descuento para la Nintendo Switch. Aun así, papá y mamá cumplieron y me compraron la consola y un juego. Yo compré otro juego con mi dinero para tener al menos dos con los que jugar. Ahora estoy contento y aprecio el regalo, considerando lo que me tocó esperar. Ah, y también le dejo jugar a Avril, porque es un regalo para los dos.

In the end, and to nobody’s surprise, Black Friday arrived. However, no promotions arrived for the Nintendo Switch, but mommy and daddy still came through and the bought me the console and a game. I bought another game with my money to have at least two to choose from. Now I’m happy and I appreciate the present, considering how long I have to wait. Ah, and Avril can play too, because the present is for both of us.

En Navidad fuimos a Perú. Fue poco más de una semana, pero lo justo para volver a la familia que no habíamos visitado en unos años.

We went to Pero for Christmas. It was little over a week, but enough to get to see the family, whom we had not visited in a few years.

La mayor parte la pasamos en Trujillo, donde repartí el tiempo entre el country club, en la piscina o jugando al baloncesto, y el cuarto de baño, porque no sé qué había pasado con el filtro del agua y me cayó bastante mal.

Most of the time we were in Trujillo, where I split my time between the county club, in the swimming pool or playing basketball, and the toilet, because for some reason the water filter was not working, and it didn’t sit well.

Aunque pasé un mal rato con ello, no me perdí ninguna comida y ninguna oportunidad de pasarlo bien.

Even though I didn’t enjoy that part, I didn’t miss any meal, nor any chance to have fun.

En la fiesta de primavera fuimos a España, con la intención de visitar a la otra parte de la familia. Hacía mucho que no los veíamos y, sinceramente, ya no me acordaba bien de todos. El viaje no fue fácil porque teníamos que hacer enlaces y nos encontramos con los aviones llenos en varias rutas. Pasamos por Alemania e Italia antes de llegar a Madrid. Lo bueno de andar dando vueltas por ahí, es que puedes visitar amigos, como Ivone que vino a vernos en la parada que hicimos en Munich.

During spring break, we went to Spain, with the intention of visiting the other part of the family. It had been long since we had last seen them and honestly, I didn’t remember well all of them. The trip wasn’t easy, because we had to connect in Germany, and we found full planes in many routes. In the end we had to go through Germany and Italy before we landed in Madrid. The good part of roaming around is that you can visit friends, like Ivone, who came to see us in our stopover in Munich.

También hicimos un poco de turismo en España. Papá nos llevó a conocer Toledo, que es una ciudad bastante rara. Aparte de restaurantes e iglesias lo que más había era tiendas de espadas, que como todo el mundo sabe, son muy útiles en el siglo XXI.

We also went for something touristic in Spain. Papá took us to get to know Toledo, which is a weird city. Besides lots of restaurants and churches, there were plenty of shops selling swords, something everyone knows is very useful in the 21st century.

De vuelta en Richmond Hill, con la llegada del buen tiempo, me llevaba el balón de baloncesto todos los días para no depender de otros para echar un partido en los recreos. En las clases de los sábados seguíamos mejorando, y lo hacíamos decentemente cuando jugábamos partidos contra otros equipos.

Back in Richmond Hill, as the weather started to improve, I took the basketball with me every day to school so that I didn´t have to rely on others to play at recess. In the Saturday lessons we kept improving and we had a decent showing when we played against other teams.

En el colegio las cosas iban bien. El curso me pareció fácil en general y estoy contento con las notas que saqué al final.

In school things were going well. I found grade 5 to be easy in general and I am happy with the grades I got.

Para mí era un año más, pero para Avril era el último año de primaria y todos éramos partícipes de sus experiencias y sus emociones. La más importante fue a finales de junio: su graduación. Hasta la abuela Chela vino a verlo:

For me it was just another year, but not for Avril, as this was her last year in primary school, and we all were aware of her experiences and emotions. The most important one was at the end of June: her graduation. Even Grandma Chela came to see it:

No sabía cómo funcionaban las graduaciones. Me sorprendió ver que había premios para los mejores en cada asignatura, y para los mejores en deportes, y para los que son buenos compañeros. Ahora ya tengo una motivación adicional para sacar buenas notas.

I didn´t know how graduations work. I was surprised to learn that there were awards for the best in every subject, and the best in sports, and those who are good classmates. Now I have an extra motivation to get good grades.

Poco después celebramos mi cumpleaños. No hicimos mucho lío, pero Claudia y Luca vinieron a jugar con nosotros y compartir tarta.

Soon after we celebrated my birthday. We didn´t do anything big, but Claudia and Luca came over to play with us and share the cake.

En un par de semanas nos vamos de vacaciones a Navalacruz, como ya es costumbre, pero antes mamá me ha apuntado a un campamento de verano de baloncesto llamado “Élite”. No sé si estoy listo para la élite, pero me da que va a subir el nivel y tendré que demostrar que sé jugar al BA-LON-CES-TO.

In a couple of weeks, we are leaving on vacation to Navalacruz, as every summer, but before Mommy has signed me up to a basketball camp called “Elite”. I don´t know if I am ready for the elite, but I expect the level to be higher and I´ll have to show them that I can play BAS-KET-BALL.
